I am trying to copy a dvd on to a blank dvd. When I insert the disc I want to rip, beside Disc RCE: it reads scanning and then clear. I then have to select the "go" button, but after doing so, I get a series of error messages starting with : DVD ERROR - failed opening ifo for the title set 0 - I then have to select go to continue and the next error reads - Mirror of VMG failed - I have to select ok and the final error reads Mirror of DVD failed. I am not able to get past these error messages. I am not sure if I am selecting the right settings. Should I be using Disc or Mode, the De-Macrovision is selected and the RCE Region is OFF.

I have never used Mac the Ripper, so all this is very new to me. I was hoping someone could talk me through this process step by step.

Thanks for your help,

Nan

Should be pretty easy. Are you trying to rip a commercial disc (that you own, of course)? Tell me more about your Mac (model and system please). I think that you get the least trouble with doing a "Full Disc Extraction" with the settings you have. If you are having trouble the UOP should be unchecked. Do you have sufficient room on the hard drive that you are burning to?

Let me know these details and we can see if there's a way around it.

Hi Jim,

My computer is a new eMac with Tiger OS with more than enough room on the hard drive. I also have a couple of other applications that I believe I need to use in ripping a commercial disc, that I of course own. In my doc I have DVD2oneX, popcorn and Toast 6 Titanium.

I hope this info helps and I look forward to hearing from you.

But what kind of disc are you trying to copy? A commercial disk or something authored at home?

Oh, and have you played a movie yet in your eMac?

I am trying to copy a commercial disc. I just tried playing both a burned disc and commercial disc but was not able to.

Hmmm. Sounds like the problem is the burner not the software. Do you know which burner is in the optical drive. It should be under the System Profiler in the ATA devices list. I'm using 10.3, so let me know if things are named differently. If your eMac is new, it might be worth a call to Apple to let them know your drive isn't able to read DVDs. The first time you play a commercial DVD sets the Region Code. You may need a firmware update, and this may or may not be easy depending on the drive.

Hi Jim,

I am able to play both commercial and burned dvds on my computer. However, when I insert a disc, the DVD Player does not open automatically. I have to double click the icon in order to open it. According to my eMac manual, the DVD Player should automatically open and start playing the disc. Any ideas on why it doesn't?

Under your System Preferences you should have a menu item like "CDs and DVDs." Select that. You should have an option with drop-down menus that says, "When you insert a video DVD..." Select "open DVD Player."

Please use Apple System Profiler to tell me what your Optical Drive and Firmware number is.

There seem to be a number of issues with ripping in Tiger, and some folks aren't successful. Have you tried different commercial discs? Is this disc from another region? If you are in the States, then you can just leave the region at 1. Also, make sure the disk isn't scratched.

Jim

My computer has a super drive (model Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D) and the Firmware Revision number is B912. I have been successful in using MTR, but now my problem lies is compressing. I have used DVD2oneX, but once it is finished, I am not sure what to do or where the compressed movie has gone.

Having fun yet? I don't use DVD2oneX, but I assume it is similar to Popcorn. Usually it will save a disc image file to your hard drive. Check your Home folder, documents, etc. It will be a 4+ GB file. In Popcorn, you can save the compressed folder to a location as a disc image if you want to burn multiple copies, or burn directly from Popcorn to DVD.

It sounds like your original errors were disc-specific.

I also have Popcorn but every time I try to use it, it unexpectly quits. (That's why I have been trying to use DVD2oneX. After I rip a movie do I just drag the Video_ts file into popcorn or is there another step I am missing? (I haven't had this much fun in ages!)

With Popcorn I have had best results by opening the Video TS folder via the menu rather than drag and drop. I seem to have less trouble. But try some different discs to get the hang of it. If you have some older titles that might be a good opportunity to try since there is unlikely to be any encryption or wrapper problems. But nothing is perfect. Usually I use MTR to rip the full disc in Region One to my desktop, then Popcorn to burn to a disc image, then Finder or Toast to burn the image, though I've used Popcorn itself to burn without problems. If I want to just burn the Main Title rather than the whole disc, I use Popcorn rather than MTR to do this. Once in a while this doesn't work, most recently with Ring 2, and then I use our XP laptop and DVDShrink to get the job done. So try a couple of different discs and see if you have trouble still. Make sure that you have the Popcorn update (1.03). Also, take a look at ripdifferent.com, particularly the forums for tips. It shouldn't be so hard (most of the time).
