Nancy, welcome on macosx.com

Ripping a DVD allow you to clone the entire DVD on your hard drive or to extract a part of it: the main title, with or without subtitles, with or without foreign languages soundtracks, ... When the DVD is ripped on the disk, you can burn a copy of it

The http://www.ripdifferent.com/ site is a good reference of the major Mac programs in this field.

A. Ripping, then burning
===============
Ripping the DVD
--------------
One of the most pwerfull mac software for ripping DVDs is a freeware:
Mac The Ripper (MTR)
MTR allows you to:
* clone the full disc or only extract a part of it (main title, chapter,..)
* get rid of Macrovision protection, region lock and most of the encryption protection (including Sony Archos protection system)

Viewing the ripped DVD
------------------
MTR creates a VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive containing the ripped parts of the DVD.
This folder can be opened in the Apple DVD player (File/Open a VIDEO_TS) or in VLC

Burning the DVD
-------------
(1) The ripped VIDEO_TS size is under the 4.6 limit size of a blank DVD-R
The freeware DVDImager (http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/apples...dvdimager.html)
will create a burnable image of the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder. Even if DVDImager is able to clone a full DVD, DVDImager cannot handle protected DVDs
Finally, we can use the burn facility of DiskUtility or Toast to burn our job onto a blank DVD
!! you must have at least twice the size of DVD to copy free on your hard drive to proceed this manual procedure !

(2) The ripped VIDEO_TS folder is above 4.6GB -> need to compress
PopCorn (http://www.roxio.com/en/products/popcorn/index.jhtml) is able to
* rip the DVD (extract the main title, suppress subtitles or soundtracks, ...) exactly as MTR,
however, Popcorn cannot handle protected DVDs, so MTR is to be used for ripping.
* to compress (and directly burn) the ripped results to fit in the range of 4.7G (good quality)
Toast7 (see under) can also compress the DVD

B. All-in-one
========
Toast7 (www.roxio.com) can, in one process, copy (or extract part of a DVD), compressed them and burn them directly
However, Toast 7 cannot copy protected DVDs

Regards
Philippe

MTR and the regions

If MacTheRipper displays ‘DISC RCE: -DETECTED-’, you must set the ‘RCE Region’ popup menu option to the region in which the DVD was purchased. For example, if you have a DVD that was purchased in N. America (Region 1), and MacTheRipper says that

RCE is detected, you must set the ‘RCE Region’ popup menu to ‘RCE 1’. So, if RCE is ‘-DETECTED-’, always set the ‘RCE Region’ to the region the DVD comes from, regardless of the numbers that show up in the ‘Region’ field.

Why this ?

MTR see there is a region but is not able to decrypt which region exactly.

If MacTheRipper displays ‘DISC RCE: -CLEAR-’ after scanning the DVD in the drive, you can leave the ‘RCE Region’ popup menu on ‘OFF’, as it is by default. Only (and always) set the ‘RCE Region’ to “OFF” when it says that RCE is ‘-CLEAR-’.

‘New Region’ should usually be left on its default of all regions selected (region 0), unless you wish to restrict the playback of the DVD to certain regions.

MTR: full disc mode or a single chapter

Launch MTR and first go to the File menu and indicates the location where MTR must save its decoded stuff
This location will appear in the"SAVE LOCATION" filed of MTR's main window

Now in the bottom of MTR window:

- if you have "DISC RCE : -CLEAR-", all is ok; let the "RCE Region" on "OFF".
- if you have "DISC RCE : -DETECTED-", then you MUST indicate in the "RCE Region" field the DVD region which is written on the DVD case;
if for instance 'Europe', set "RCE 2" ; if 'USA', set "RCE 1"

3) Do not touch to the "New Region"field !

4) Now click on "Mode" and select the appropriate option for extracting: "Full Disc Extraction" (recommended), "Main Title". Some options allow you to suppress foreign soundtracks, subtitles: see MTR help

5) Click on "Go" and let MTR does its job
MTR creates in the folder referenced under "Save location" a VIDEO_TS folder
