I have a Mac OS 10.4.7 that won't start up or go to the log in screen. My mac will turn on, and a start up noise is heard, but then stops when the grey apple screen with the process indicator appears. I cannot start it up in either Safe Mode or Single User mode. When the Disk Utility First Aid is used, it gives a list of errors:

Incorrect block count for file asl.log (It should be 1810 instead of 905)
Invalid key length
Needs to be repaired
Underlying task report failure on exit (-9972)
1 volume could not be repaired.

Emily,

When ever Disk Utility can not repair the drive, it is time for a third party utility to do the job.
There are a few good third party utilities that are highly recommended.
Disk Warrior

TechToolPro

http://www.micromat.com/index.php

Use the CD of the program to start up the computer and have it scan and repair the drive.

Once done, restart the computer and see if everything is corrected. Once it starts up and logs you in, use Disk Utility from the Applications>Utilities folder to repair permissions. (click on the second icon in the side bar at the left, then click on Repair Permissions).

You should be running smoothly. Let me know if you need further assistance.
