Safari application will not start and disk utility app will lock up with spinning ball when hard drive selected. Other apps seem to work fine.
When I startup using original install/restore disk (version 10.3) and try disk utility, then select either repair or verify permissions, the progress bar only gets about 1/3 of the way and an alert pops up:
Disk Utility internal error
Disk Utility lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please Quit and relaunch Disk Utility
Then I checked the Log file and found:
root:bootstrap_look_up():unknown error code

Anyone with any ideas?
When I did the same with a 10.4 install disk, it ran permissions repair, found some problems and fixed them. But the same Safari lockup with spinning when as it starts (before and web page display just empty window) and lockup once drive selected in disk utility reoccurs when rebooted into 10.3.9.
Hi Wiheba
Disk Utility lost its connection;
Remove the iTunes receipt packages (pkg files) from the Library/Receipts folder.
Restart and then try running Disk Utility.
This is a known problem on 10.3.x.
For Safari, trash the 'com.apple.safari.plist' file located in User/Library/Preferences and also the Safari cache folder in User/Library/Caches.

Thank you for the information, bobw.
I tried your ideas and they have not helped out either problem. They still both act the same way after the steps you laid out above.
I also tried using carbon copy cloner to clone the drive elsewhere before I try an upgrade to 10.4 or reformat and go back to 10.3 and I get the same spinning ball and then have to force quit CCC (version 2.3 since I am still on 10.3).
Any other ideas?
In User/Library take the Safari Folder out to your Desktop.
Trash the Safari.plist file again.
Restart and try Safari and see if it works.
If it does, take the Bookmarks.plist file out of the Safari folder on your Desktop and put it back in the new Safari folder in User/Library.
If none of this helps, I would either do an
Archive & Install or reformat the drive and install OS X fresh. To do this, you'll need to backup anything you can't replace easily.

We had to resort to the Archive & Install without reformatting in order to fix the issues. Thank you for your help.
