TICKET ARCHIVE -> Mail 2.0.5 Reply Button Not Working

Before yesterday all was fine. I could send and receive messages.

As of yesterday, I can receive mail, but can't reply to messages or send new messages. The reply and reply all buttons don't work at all, but are still lit up. The forward button still works.

I can open a new message window, but can't send the message. But I can save the message as a draft.

The account settings have not changed. The Connection Doctor says that I am connecting to the servers just fine.

I went into the library and renamed the mail folder and moved the com.apple.mail.plist folder to the trash and started mail. As expected, it asked me to set things up from scratch. The problem remain.

My ISP offers a web interface and I can log into that and send mail with no problem.

I downloaded Norton Internet Security 3.0 and did a virus check. It found 3 Windows viruses and I deleted those messages. I have not run a second virus check since then.

Mac OS 10.4.3 (as of 2 weeks ago) on a soccar ball IMac.

Hi

Download 'Onyx' (free);

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070

Under Cleaning, put a check in ALL Caches and run it, then try Mail.

It is a neat tool, but it did not help.

I forgot to mention that I set up a new account and had no problem sending mail.

Next would be to reinstall Mail from your Tiger disc doing a custom install for only Mail.

Finally found the optional install package and reinstalled mail. That took me from 2.0.5 back to 2.0. Still no help. And I can still send from the other account on this box. So it is something to do with my main account on this box.

Trash the Mail application, the Mail folder in user>library, the Mail plist file in user>library>preferences

Restart, Repair Permissions, then boot off the OS disc and repair disk. then reinstall Mail again and see if it works.

Easier than wiping the disk and reinstalling from scratch, but it still did not help. My next step is to copy the mail folder from the main account to the test account and see if it will work over there. I assume that as long as I create accounts that match the .mbox files in the copied folder, it will work.

I copied the mail file over, fixed the owner:group, opened mail and rebuilt the mailboxes. I was able to reply to the first message, so concluded that there is not a corupt message causing the problem.

I next moved each of my personal plist files to the trash one by one and tested mail inbetween, but no help there. I did not expect any since plutil said all my plist files were OK.

Must be either a message or attachment causing the problem.

I would trash Mail application again and it's preference.
Move the Mail folder from the User>Library to the desktop.
Reinstall Mail from the disc.
Then open Mail and setup as new, down't move the mail folder back into the Library.

After you setup your accounts, try using Mail. If it works, and you have mail in the old boxes you want to keep, use the Import to get them back,into the mail program, rather than moving the Mail folder back into the Library.

As I said, there does not seem to be a corupt message or attachment. The mail folder works fine under a different Mac login account.

1) I moved the mail and mail downloads folder elsewhere.
2) I trashed the plist and mail application.
3) I reinstalled from disk.
4) I ran mail and had the same problem.

So, it is not:
1) corupt message or attachment
2) corupt plist preference file. I moved them all to the trash folder one by one and tried to use Mail. I did this without logging out or rebooting between plist files.
3) corupt program
4) the OS, because it is only this login account that is having the problem

Open this path;

System>Library>Privateframeworks>ScreenReader.framework>Versions>A>English.lprog>ExceptionsDatabases --------TRASH the 'com.apple.mail.plist' file from there.

Then try Mail

Just how many places did Apple put preference files? LOL

I trashed that one, but no luck. I then searched for any file with the text string mail.plist and trashed the only other one there was, which was in my personal library.

I guess I will download Preferential Treatment and check all of the plist files on the system. Or maybe go to a terminal and use find to find them all and run putil.

On a related subject, do you think paying for a service call to Apple would do me any good. I don't think they would tell me anything that you have not.

So if checking all the other plist files does not help, I will wipe the drive clean and do a fresh install and restore from tape. Sure glad I invested in a tape backup system. On that note, do you prefer Retrospect, Legato, or some other system for backing up Macs?

I wouldn't wipe the drive because of this. Since Mail works in a different account, I would just move my stuff to that account, then delete the old one. Something in the account's Library is causing the problem. I definitely woudn't pay for a service call, as they would go through the same as I did, then tell you to reformat.

I use ChronoSync for daily backups;

and SuperDuper to clone my main drive about once a month;

Good news. Yesterday, one by one, I moved the plist files from my personal library to the trash and tested mail. No luck. I forgot that I had to log out and log back in each time. I guess the login program reads all the plist files each time I log in.

Today I moved all my plist files to another place, logged out and logged back in. I then set up my mail accounts again and things work. I then moved the mailboxes from the copy of the mail file I made when all this started, rebuilt the mailboxes, and all is back to normal.

My next task is to move the plist files I want back in and mak sure none of them are corupt.

Thanks for your help. I am a pretty good Unix admin, and I see it as a testimony to how good the Apple OS is, that I did not know this basic stuff before now. I just never had reason to learn it.
