when putting an address in mail to send an email the spiral comes up and keeps spinning (too long). how do you stop the 'death spiral'?

Your question does not say much. If you have a LDAP-server connected to mail it might be trying to search the database for addresses. Or it could be something wrong with your addressbook.

I am using a pop account, adsl service. unfortunately I am not very savy with computers.
I have switched over to using Entourage and Internet Explorer instead of macintosh 'mail' and safari and the machien seems to be working better.
I have 10.3.9 emac.
I will check my address book.
