After losing iPhoto I reinstalled 10.5 on my MacBook with the related apps from the instal disk and updated to 10.5.2.
Now mail crashes every time I try to start it. I don't understand crash reports etc. but here's what was in the Send to Apple report. I later found out how to just install mail so I did that too, with no different result
Any help would be gratefully received.

Did you install the Leopard Graphics Update, too? At what point does Mail crash? Does it start opening and crash immediately? Does it show the main window and crash just after it tries to check for mail? Does holding Shift on its startup, preventing any mailboxes from showing initially, change its behavior from there?

* no, but I have now. I never saw it on Software Update. It doesn't make any difference, though.
At what point does Mail crash? Does it start opening and crash immediately?
* yes, it doesn't start at all, just gives an error message which offers the chance to Relaunch, and when I do that it offers a further chance to Reset and Relaunch, which doesn't make any difference either.
Does it show the main window and crash just after it tries to check for mail?
*no, it doesn't get that far

*no, it doesn't

Does it help to use Disk Utility to repair disk permissions? It looks like a problem with iLife integration rather than Mail itself. Did Software Update do iLife Support 8.2, too? Maybe try
reinstalling that one.

* Yippee! that worked. Thanks so much - I am REALLY grateful
1) How do I now donate?
2) Is there any way I can make sure Software Update doesn't miss these things in the future?
Best wishes

er, sorry but now there's a new problem which is that Mail doesn't get the mail. It seems to have found all the old settings for the two accounts I use, but doesn't go online to download the mail. I know there's some waiting because I got it in Eudora OK.
TIA

Sometimes a reinstall is all that's needed. Not something Software Update has control over. Is Mail online? Check the Mailbox menu or the lightning bold in the toolbar.

I've just reinstalled Mail from the OSX disk but I didn't delete the existing copy first. Both my mailboxes are online, but Get Mail just produces a very quick spinning wheel and then back to the Exclamation mark in a triangle sign which means it failed to contact.
Thanks again for keeping trying to solve this...

Now sorted - the authentication field had somehow changed but I've reset it manually and all is now well.
Many thanks
