I have been having strange mail issues for a week or so. following an automatic download of recent security update from apple.
Since then there have been lots of problems; mail has been delivered erratically, the program has been repeatedly sending the same messages out from my mail, and is repeatedly delivering old messages in even several days after they were originally sent, also new messages are delayed. I have downloaded a Virus scan by Avast but there is no virus showing on my system PLEASE can you help? I spoke with shaw.ca my ISP and they checked their system and told me it is a problem my end, but I can't figure out what to do.....

Jemma,

Welcome to Macosx.com

You might try moving or (trashing) the preference file (com.apple.mail.plist) and restarting.

Please SAVE YOUR emails, make a back up.

By doing this OSX will rebuild a new com.apple.mail.plist file.

HOW TO:
Open the finder and paste this ( com.apple.mail.plist ) into the search field. Make sure you are searching your COMPUTER, indicated at the top of the finder. Drag the file to the desk top, then shut down and restart! You should be up and running after that.

Again... please create a back up or archive of your current emails and address book residing in your inbox and mail.app.

Let us know if the problem persists.

Warmly,

CaribbeanOS-X

Ok, so I did as you suggested, and it seems Ok this end, although I'm still hearing that old messages are being received, they are not leaving this end, so I asume they must be stored on the server or something?

One question...how do I add back in the mail folder that I saved? Can I just copy and paste the contents, and if so what do I do about the duplicate folders that are there now that I created the mail set up from the beginning again?
Thanks for your quick reply...this is AWESOME!!!

I copied the previously backed-up files back into the mail folder but although they show up in the list of emails, the content is not available, and tells me that I must connect to the server to download. When I do connect nothing happens with the old files although I am receiving and sending email fine.

Is it possible to rebuild the mailbox by selecting Rebuild from the Mailbox menu? Does that have any affect?

I did that and it shows the title of each message in the appropriate mailbox, but when I click on the link it brings up a notice below:

"The message from Christopher Heffley concerning “Re: Super Urgent Favour!!!” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."

I will try again, and reinstall the mail folder to see if I did something wrong the first time.

Thanks

Did CarribeanOS-X ever tell you explicitly how to back up your email?, by copying the entire Mail folder from your Library. To restore it, the simplest thing would have been to drag the entire Mail folder back to the Library. That would assume you hadn't sent or received any messages in the meantime (that weren't saved to a server). At this point, you may be forced to manually import the backup mailboxes and return those messages to the appropriate places.
