I'm using the mail application that comes with OSX. A few days ago, the program started giving me messages saying that the mail I was sending couldn't be delivered. After that message, there is the following url:
http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=...29.38EXTERNAL|
I'm not sure what this means or how to fix it. I can still receive mail, but somehow my outgoing mail is being blocked.
Any way I can get this to stop?

Nella,

For some reason, your IP address has been reported as sending spam and you are being blocked from sending any emails. The IP number is the number associated with your location/computer.

First, check Mail to see what port and SMTP server you are using. With Mail open go to the Mail menu and select Preferences.
When that opens, click on the Accounts icon. At the bottom of that window is Outgoing Mail Server. It should list your ISP mail server. Immediately under that is Server Settings. Click on that button.

Now a new window should open and it should show you what port, server and authentication method. Many ISPs are changing the way their server accepts sent email in order to stop spam from getting sent. You have to check with your ISP for the correct settings. Your ISP should have those settings listed on their web site. If you need help finding the correct setting, let me know what your ISP is. I'll check for you. Your ISP is the company you have your main email address with and connect to the internet with.

Once we have established that your settings are correct, I'll help you get your IP number off the banned list.

Nella,

I have found a web site that gives you instructions on how to remove your IP number from the banned list. All you need to do is follow the instructions.

http://cbl.abuseat.org/remove.cgi?ip=71.167.229.38

If you need help understanding it, let me know.

Great, thank you!
I read through the whole site, and I think I understand. I'm just confused about how I got the virus in the first place and why it would be affecting my college mail server (I can send e-mails from AOL just fine). Do you have any ideas on that? I'd like to prevent this from happening again.

Nella,

I don't think you have a virus on your machine. I think someone may have used your email address to send out spam emails. But just to be sure, download ClamXav and install it.

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15850/clamxav

Then have it scan your entire hard drive. One word of advice - do not allow the program to quarantine your mail. If you do, you will not be able to access your emails.

If it finds a virus in one of your emails, it will give you the title of that email so you can delete it. Then remember to empty the trash of Mail. (it is separate from your system trash can in your dock)

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Cheryl
