The Mail app which ships with OSX has been opening apparently spontaneously since Panther. I hoped, unsuccesfully, Tiger would resolve the issue. I'm sure it's in my user settings since I don't have this problem with my home computer.
I'm using a Power Mac dual G5 with 2.5 MB RAM running Tiger version 10.4.1. I've got a Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse and a Wacom Intuos 2 tablet. Everything else is pretty much standard hardware.
As a graphic artist I use Adobe software most of the time. In GoLive, Photoshop, InDesign, or even Safari I can be typing something when the Mail app suddenly opens on top of everything else. I can quit it or minimize it and it will reopen sometimes immediately, sometimes only after keyboard activity. Whenever I put the computer to sleep Mail is already open when the computer wakes up. It doesn't seem to happen until a few hours into the day and running Cocktail seems to help. I've checked all my System prefs and software prefs, in case something is making a call to Mail, with no success.
The activity monitor shows these processes in this order: mdimport, AppleSpell, Logitech Control Center Daemon, Epson Scanner Monitor, iCal Alarm Scheduler, Transport Monitor, Palm Desktop Background, Window Clock, iTunes Helper, SystemUIServer, TabletDriver, pbs, loginwindow, ATSServer, and SyncServer. Sometimes SyncServer appears at the top with mdimport. I kept Activity Monitor open to see if it would tell me anything, but I don't know enough about how to use it.
My user login items are: iTunes Helper, Palm Desktop Background, Transport Monitor, iCal Alarm Scheduler, Epson Scanner Monitor, and LCCDaemon. I don't have a clue what most of these do, or how they got installed.
I don't know if it's related, but I've been unable to get my Palm Zire to sync. I reinstalled the Palm Desktop without success and am not even sure if its needed with Tiger, though I don't know how to uninstall it completely either.
It's to the point I can't get any work done--I have to quit Mail after almost every keystroke. The odd thing is that sometimes it will settle down for a few minutes, then the problem returns again, though it seems to get progressively worse over time. And sometimes Mail will open without any keyboard or mouse/tablet activity at all (like when the computer sleeps).
I did a clean archive and install of Tiger in hopes this would help but all I ended up with is the same problem along with the dissappearance of my address book and calendars (a previous calendar backup is there but the new iCal won't open it) and all my prefs had to be redone.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
