I have a secondary internal HD & an Eternal HD both have Leopard 10.5.4. My primary HD is Tiger which is fine. The problem is identical on both HD's with Leopard. I had recently purchased the Leopard DVD. But I left my primary HD on Tiger in case any conflicts occurred with my 2nd party applications.

First is the "Mail" application. It Launches fine but when I click to get my mail, the progress bar shows for example it is receiving 15 messages. After the progress bar finishes, only ONE message is displayed in the mailbox. No matter how many messages are being received, I always only get one. When I go to the menu bar to quit Mail it closes, but the icon remains lit in the dock. If I do "command, option,
escape" the Mail is shown in the list of applications. However it does not have the
(not responding) words showing. I have to "force quit" it to remove it from the
dock. Everything else is accessible, including sending mail.

Next is the "Safari" application. When it launches it bounces & appears in the menu bar then quits. I must use another browser to go on line as I ma doing now to get advice.

I've used "Disk Utility": Repairs Permissions & Repair Disk, but the problem still
exits on BOTH drives. I was thinking about trashing the prefs. on both, but won't
I loose all my saved mail & settings for both?

Thank you for your time & expertise,
Tom Fleck

P.S. I submitted this question earlier this summer. But I never checked to see if my e-mail address was current. It was not, I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I have updated my address.

Sounds like it could be a problem with your Mac OS X user account. Did you upgrade this computer to Tiger from something prior? Regardless, try creating a new admin account in System Preferences and logging into it. Setup Mail and Safari there and test them thoroughly. Same problems?

If not, you could try trashing Mail and Safari preference files in your main account and trying them again. Or perhaps the problem is deeper and it's worth backing up your data and restoring it to the new account.
