I wish to make "Replace" the default in the file save dialog.
It used to be a feature of "Default Folder" by St Clair Software, but they dropped this feature when "Command R" was implemented is OSX.
Anyone know of a solution?

In Tiger, most applications (at least native OS X ones) have Replace as the default button. In Carbon apps, like AppleWorks and QuarkXPress, where Cancel is the default, there's still a quick way to press Replace. If you have Full Keyboard Access turned on for All Controls (in Keyboard & Mouse preferences, under Keyboard Shortcuts, in System Prefs), you can press the spacebar for replace in these applications. It will be the first selected button, even though not the default. Does this work for you?

Thanks for the response Ben,
I'm talking photoshop where I shoot say 300 images per game of hockey about 3 times a week. Saving one keystroke for each processing would be a real boon.
I'm trying to sort out automating much of this within Photoshop, but PS does a lot of weird things when you try automating the replace function.

I'm curious what you're doing in Photoshop for 900 photos a week that you can't do with iPhoto, which you can probably automate a little easier. At least the space bar you can script in AppleScript. Is that helpful?, or shall I throw you back in the pool?

iPhoto can't do NEF files... (Nikon D200)
Photos have to end up in folders which are named according to the client and date of game. Iphoto gets really messy trying to do that.
It may be that I'm not doing it justice so if you see and easy way round this let me know.
Thanks for the dialog, help and interest.

Are you using Tiger?, and if so, are there Automator actions for Photoshop that would be useful for this process. (I imagine there would be.) I couldn't walk you through them because I'm not familiar with them (obviously), however I encourage you to search for photoshop at and explore the possibilities with Automator.
I'll transfer you back to the pool for more help if you like.

Appreciate your help.
