TICKET ARCHIVE -> Making Pdf's Through Quark?

Hi,
Having a spot of bother with my PDF's.
I'm using Quark 6.5 and Acrobat 6 professional on my iMac 18ghz with 1.5 GB RAM, running OSX10.3.9. When making pdf's through Quark, File: Export everything goes fine until I open up to check the pdf in Acrobat and up comes the message 'array length is out of range' not sure what this means? But worse still my clients also get this message when they open up my pdf's.
Quark, File: Export sometimes throws up this message; 'You are saving this file in a space which may not separate correctly. Do you wish to continue?'
Is this connected to my problem above?
Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi Dodge,

QXP is a great app, but I have ZERO confidence in its ability to produce a decent PDF.

You say you have Acrobat 6 Pro. In that case, you also have Acrobat Distiller. So use that instead. If you look in your Quark Prefs/PDF, you will see an option that allows you to create a .PS file for distilling later. Select that.

Then, next time you want to create a PDF, just print as you would normally, using AdobePDF as your printer. If you open up Distiller, you can set a 'Watched' folder. If you print your .PS file directly into the 'In' subfolder of your 'Watched' folder, whenever Distiller is running, it will search there for .PS files and automatically distill them whenever it finds one and copy the .PS file and resultant PDF file to the 'Out' subfolder.

The 'array length' error message you describe is not one I have come across, but it indicates that Quark is not producing a correct PDF file. The error message you get from QXP about 'You are saving this file in a space which may not separate correctly.' Means that you are printing a file which contains RGB colours or images to a CMYK PDF format.

To get around that, you must ensure that all images imported into the QXP file are in CMYK format and that none of the colours defined in your colour palette are set up as spot colours.

Hope that helps. Get back to me if you need any more help on the subject or if anything I have said here seems to conflict with what you are experiencing.

Hi
Thanks for your prompt and illuminating reply, I've tried the 'ps' route and converting later to a pdf that seems to work. It also seems that if I have a bitmapped tiff(s) in my Quark layout this causes the message 'array length is out of range' to appear.
How do Quark manage to produce a programme with features that apparently don't work? It all seemed to worked fine when it was first set up on my new Mac, I was hoping it was something that could be rectified, as when it works it saves a lot of time.
Thanks again for your help and interest.

Hi Dodge,

I also contribute on Quark's own forum – or at least I did until a couple of weeks ago, when it started crashing every browser I use! You would find it quite astonihing how many people have complained about the b@lls-up that Quark have made of v6.x!

I'm a long-time Quark user, but have to admit that they have only ONE CHANCE left. If v7 isn't right, then I'll have to bite the bullet and switch to InDesign. It's not so much that Quark have shot themsleves in the foot as emptied the whole magazine!

If TIFFs are causing you to get an 'array length' error, then you should look at them, rather than QXP. What application are you using to edit your TIFFs? Could it be that you are trying to import 42-bit TIFFs? If so, try dropping them to 24-bit. There will be no difference in print quality AND it will save hard disk space and make your apps run faster with less data to keep track of.

Hope that helps. Keep in touch.

Hi Captain Quark

I generally make my tiffs in Photoshop! I can see 8bit/channel and 16 bit/channel is this what you mean or is there something else hidden away in PS that I've yet to find?

QXP file CMYK format and that none of the colours defined in
your colour palette are set up as spot colours. This seems to solve the message 'You are saving this file in a space which may not separate correctly. Do you wish to continue"
Thanks for that.

Finally if I install 'Tiger' will it solve some of these problems with QXP/Acrobat?

Thanks again for all your help...Dodge

Hi Dodge,

Some scanning software, such as Silverfast, will produce 42-bit TIFFs, but if you're opening them up in Photoshop and saving them out, then you shouldn't have any problems there.

I'm still on 10.3.9, so unfortunately I can't answer your question about QXP & Tiger, but judging by the marked increase in complaints about a vriety of problems after upgrading to Tiger, I wouldn't have thought that it would help.

Quark are (hopefully) tailoring v7 to work with Tiger, so an upgrade of both at the same time may solve a number of problems. (And pig might fly ;-) )

Glad to have been able to help.
