I keep getting kernel panics (whole system lockup w grey screen) when running SuperDuper on my MacPro. I'm sure its due to an extension, startup item or a driver but am unsure how best to troubleshoot this w/o uninstalling all the many programs I'm running.
Is there a utility for Tiger 10.4.9 Intel to selectively and reversibly disable startup items, extensions and drivers? There used to be many startup managers for Mac but I can't find any for modern OS X.
Thanks!
Hi Steve
Try starting in Safe Mode and running SuperDuper. Safe Mode disables all Extensions and Startup Items not necessary for the system to run.
You might also want to Repair Permissions from the Disk Utility in your Utility folder, then boot off the Install disc and run Disk Utility to Repair Disk before using SuperDuper.

Thanks for the reply. I did try in safe mode, and it works perfectly, so I know its an extension or startup item, and not hardware related. What I'm looking for is a way to find out WHICH extension etc causing the problem, short of uninstalling everything. Any ideas? Its hard to manually find and sort through all the folders, etc.
I'm surprised there are no utilities for Tiger compared to older versions of the OS.

There's a program called
Preferential Treatment you can try for preference files. I've never used it, so don't know how well it works.
As for Startup Items, open the Accounts PreferencePane and you'll see Login Items. Remove all of those and see what happens. If all is okay, then add back one at a time and try.
You can also look in Library/Startup Items and see if anything is in there and remove to the Desktop and try.
