...Jan 6 13:09:56 TheLemon crashdump[12810]: mdimportserver crashed...

I have already moved everything suspicious out of /Library/Spotlight and re-logged in. I also repaired permissions on my boot disk. I don't know if this matters, but some possibly-conflicting software I'm running includes:
- Quicksilver (maybe screwing with spotlight?)
- Visor (http://docs.blacktree.com/visor/visor) which requires...
- SIMBL (http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php)

Additionally, the mdimport command in terminal errors with this message:
$ mdimport -L
Illegal instruction

...Which looks to be exactly what happens when mdimportserver crashes.
Here's the full console.log crash message:

Code:
Jan 6 13:17:02 TheLemon launchd: Server 7e33 in bootstrap d103 uid -2: "/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Metadata.framework/Versions/A/Support/mdimportserver"[12932]: exited abnormally: Illegal instruction
Jan 6 13:17:02 TheLemon crashdump[12933]: mdimportserver crashed
Jan 6 13:17:02 TheLemon crashdump[12933]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/mdimportserver.crash.log
The uid is sometimes -2, sometimes 501.

Hi and welcome to macosx.com

I run 10.4.6 and Quicksilver without any problem.

I've also read that SIMBL plug-in can cause troubles, but I'm not sure your problem is related to.

What you can do is remote SIMBL plug-in and, forgetting Visor for a moment, watch the console to see if the mdimport fails again.

To remove SIMBL:
1. In the finder, click on Macintosh HD and then click on the system level Library folder.
2. Within Library there will be a folder called InputManagers that may exist, may or may not be empty.
3. If InputManagers exists and contains a folder called SIMBL, drag the latter to the desktop.

You can also use Spotlight to search for SIMBL or if Spotligth refuses, the Finder Search capability or download Easyfind from
http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/index.html
to perform the search
Both search SIMBL and simbl (lowercase)

Restart. Repair permissions again. And test

Regards
Philippe

That seems to have remedied the problem.
Too bad I can't use Visor and still keep my Mac healthy :P
Thanks for all your help!

I do not know why this SIMBL is causing so much troubles -it also crashes Safari in some configuration-.

Thank you for using macosx.com

Philippe
