I have more than 80 gigs on my drive unused. I have tons of memory and can open Photoshop, Quark, Safari, Netfinder, and you name it all at once with no poblerms. When I open Microsoft Word, (which was working fine earlier), I keep getting a message that "there is not disk space or memory to complete the operation." The file I'm trying to open has no grahics, just type and it's only 200 KB.

I've quit out of all other programs and restarted. Still getting that message but only with Word files.

Hmmm.

Hello.

My guess is that this is a problem with one of Word's preference files.
1. Quit Word.
2. Go to your user's Library folder, then to the Preference folder and move any files and folders related to Word on the Desktop.
3. Also in your Library folder, go to the Application Support folder and move any files and folders related to Word to the Desktop (keep them separate so that you can put them back if you like).
4. Also in your Library folder, go the the Caches folder and move any files and folders related to Word to the Trash.
5. Now (perhaps log out and back in again, but you shouldn't have to) open Word files and see if the problem continues.

If the problem is gone, quit Word and put all items that came from the Application Support folder back where they came from. Now check again to see if the problem with Word files is back. If it is back, we'll discuss this some more. If it is not back, great!

If you did not have any or many special preferences set, you can delete those files which came from the Preferences folder. If you did, then we'll discuss this some more (basically, we'll return them one by one and see which is at fault and then delete it.

Please write back and let me know how this worked for you.

Best wishes,
Ed

I'm in the middle of a nightmare here with a job, but when I have a breather I really need to get together with someone on this Font Book issue. I've moved from System 8.6 to OS X, from Quark 4 to Quark 6.5, and from ATM Deluxe to FontBook and I think I must be thinking about it all wrong. I'm working on a job now and every time I quit out of Quark and open the document again, my fonts are all screwy. It's sooooooooooooooo frustrating! It keeps telling me I have duplicates, and then when I Resolve Duplicates, it takes the wrong ones. Customers provide me with their fonts to assemble their publications. Many of these fonts have been customized to accommodate diacritics and custom kerning. When I upload their job back to them, they ONLY want to see their fonts in there, no others. That's a very strict rule. FontBook seems to have a mind of its own and strews them all over the place. I understand Users is for me only under my name, Library is for everyone, but my Helvetica system font interferes with the Helvetica font my client supplied me with to work on their job, it's just so aggravating. ATM did it so simply and so easily. I just clicked on the fonts folder that the customer supplied and dragged it over my ATM icon. BOOM! Done.

Twas ever thus. I'll get back later on this because I'm so swamped and they're probably forming a posse right about now.

Hello, Sandra.

Thank you for your kind evaluation of me.

When you have time to work on the font issue, I'd suggest that you issue a new request, because I don't know a lot about font management. In addition, your question will get a fresh look by the techs who read it. In fact, you might post it in MacOSX.com's Forums where it will get viewed by a more people who perhaps have knowledge of fonts. I've heard of the following font management utilities, but don't know how good they are:

Font Doctor
Suitcase
FontAgentPro

Take care.
Ed
