Hi Doc and welcome to No Wonder!
I am assuming that you have the full Hard Disk Toolkit rather than the Personal Edition.
First of all download the latest drivers from FWB here: http://www.fwb.com/dc/hdt/dev_data25.html and follow the instructions to install them.
Do you have another hard drive that you can boot from?
If so boot from it, run HDT, click on the drive to be formatted then click on the auto-initialise icon.
If you don't have another drive to boot from, copy HDT to a floppy, boot from the OS8.5CD and run HDT from the floppy.
Next, boot from the OS8.5CD and run the installer. Choose the drive to install on to, carry on with the installation past the license blurb, then click on the "options..." button and deselect "Update Apple Drivers", then continue with the installation.
