Gavin, welcome to macosx.com
Error -40
Compacting failed. A read/write error has occurred (-40)
Error -40 is a positioning error (tried to position before start of file). This might indicate file system corruption

So, I would try, in ascending order of importance

(1) repair permissions
(must be admin)
Launch Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility
On the left pane, select the drive
On the right, select the First Aid (or SOS) tab
Then click on repair permissions and let run; don not worry about messages like " new permissions...."
Quit DiskUtility
Shutdown and reboot

(2) repair disk;
Follow the reapir disk procedure in this article
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html

(3) Restart in Single-User Mode. Hold Command-S Key down when booting. This dumps you into single-user mode. When the scrolling has stopped, type
/sbin/fsck -y
and press return. This will initiate a Unix repair function called fsck (for file system check) If fsck makes any repairs you'll get a message that says File system was modified. Run fsck again until the message no longer appears. Once all repairs are made, type reboot and press return

But please consider that a database of 2GB is dangerous: please empty it !

Regards
Philippe

It seems that none of these options make a difference.
What next?

And how can I delete some of the data? I cannot open it.
Neither did i realise it was 2gb...and if i did i have never seen a warning regarding this.

Thanks so much for your help...i hope we can sort it out.

Gavin,
Could you try holding down the shift key during launch to prevent startup schedules from firing.
If this allows you to enter within Entourage or not

About the 2GB limit.
This is not a official limit, but for all the emails clients which put all their information within a same unique database, it is good to avoid an excessive database

One of my colleague (OE, 9.x) lost all his mails when its 3GB refuses to work !

Still looking for another solution

Thanks again.
Holding shift down didn't do anything at all.
System just kept rebooting...then when I took my finger off shift it booted up in what it said was safe mode but on system load there were no differences.
Thanks...
ps info i have lost are emails, all the content of which, and my calender.

How can i access this data?

Regards
