I have Microsoft Word 11.3.8 (I had 11.3.5 but updated today).
When checking my Preferences under Spelling and Grammar, it is all greyed out and I cannot :
Check as you type
always suggest corrections, etc.
How do I make sure that I can use these preferences, please?

Hi James -

Try trashing your Word preferences file in ~/Library/Preferences (look for and trash a file called com.microsoft.Word.plist).

Make sure Word isn't running when you trash the preferences file, then launch Word and see if that addresses the problem.

Also, the current version of Word is 11.4.2. The Microsoft Updater won't tell you if there's additional updates after you apply a single update, the best trick is to just keep applying updates until it says no more are available.

I tried that but no difference.
When I try to check the gramar, a sheet tells me that Grammar (UK) is not loaded.
I have noticed but ignored the fact that the spell checker is not working.
Is the next stage to delete the MS Word application and start over again? But this mean downloading a whole lot of updates.

Before re-installing let's try something else -- In System Preferences create a new acccount. Login to that account, launch Word and see if the problem persists. If not, then we know the problem occurs in your account only which means re-installing Office/Word from scratch is probably not required.

I created a new account, and logged in on that account. The problem persists.
When I used Tools and tried to Grammar check, the response was, "Grammar UK file not loaded" or words to that effect.

What now?

Hi James -

I've searched various forums and whatever without success, I can't seem to find mention of your problem with Word. If it were me I'd try deleting and re-installing Microsoft Office. Rather just deleting the applications, I'd use the un-installer to make sure everything gets removed.

However, I appreciate your concerns that the all the updates will have to be downloaded again, so I'll re-open this case to see if any other tech has additional suggestions. If so, great, if not, try the re-install and either re-open this new ticket, or submit a new one if things still aren't working right.

Thank you, it is what I expected. I shall use the Uninstaller.

I have now reinstalled. Thank you for the hint about continually checking for updates. The first response was "No updates are required". I have now got MS Word 2004 for Mac 11.4.2 (TWO).
The problem with the grayed out Spelling and Grammar has been resolved.
Thank you.
A problem I had earlier has not however been solved by this reinstallation and updating. That is, when using the "Page number of total pages" the monitor shows, "page 1 of 4, page 2 of 4, page 3 of 4, page 4 of 4" But PRINTS, PAGE 1 OF 1, PAGE 2 OF 2, page 3 of 3, page 4 of 4".
I have asked this question before, but have not been able to resolve the issue.
Thank you for your help.
