I have Mac OSX 10.3.9 and MS Word version 11.3.5.

From Word 2004 I have used the automatic update, but the response is that I have the latest version.
However, on the MS website, it shows that there are downloads for 10.3.6 and 10.3.7 (a gap for 10.3.8) and then 10.3.9,
According to the system requirements they are for OSX 10.2 and higher, but when I download them they are not accepted. It is almost as if they are for Tiger but don't say so in the website.

James,

First go to Home>Library>Preferences.
Go to the View menu and select by list.
Now scroll down to locate the com.Microsoft.autoupdate.plist
and trash it.
Empty the trash.
Now try the updating Word.
If you decide to do the manual download you must apply each new update in sequence. This web site lists all the updates:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

Other users are also having the same problem. Keep me posted on how you do.

Thanks Cheryl
I tried it but came up with the same response - it rejected the update.

I didn't get the exact wording, but something like there was something missing.

James,

The next step is to trash the MS Word and then re-install it. Then have it update itself. Do you have the original install disk?

I do have the original install disk.
I tried that some time again when had a problem with the numbering of footers, i.e. page X of Y. It printed Page 1 of 1, Page 2 of 2, Page 3 of 3, etc.

I have just wondered if it is because I only have Word 2004 and not the rest of the Office suite.

James,

Boy, do I feel stupid. You are correct. I had just helped some one with an Office problem and just wasn't thinking. Those updates you speak of are for Office. What you need to update Word is called Service Paks.

There is one update and two service packages. Check out this web site under downloads.

I triede one service package but got the same response. I think I will give up the idea of updating. I am seriously thinking of going back to Apple Works.

Thanks for your help Cheryl.

James,

I personally do not use Microsoft products because they do not make it easy for the user (even their OS is clunky). I did a more extensive search for Word 2004 help and all that came up was Office support.

I use Appleworks and occasionally use Pages (comes with iWorks) for my work.

I am sorry I could not be of more help. Would you like me to reopen this ticket for another tech to try?

I think I will go back to AppleWorks. I only changed because of one facility on Word.
Thanks for your help. I you, Cheryl. I don't need any tech. I will close the matter.
Thanksw
James.
