OK, I managed to download the installer (not for OSX tiger but jaguar) and it seemed like it installed OK but then when I tried to launch the program it then launched the "OCR" module which got me nowhere as far as making an actual scan. Help!

Maybe this will help?

Depends on your model.

I checked out the site but it looks a little technical for me, plus I am not sure if maybe the problems I'm having have anything to do with the fact my Photoshop CS is "borrowed." While I was doing the scanner software installation I got a message that read:
"(Error 1) Installation of Scanwizard 5 V7.11 plug in for Adobe Photoshop failed. To resolve, refer to the error codes listed below. Error 1: You may have insufficent privelages to write to the destination. Please change the privelages and try again."

Any insights here?

Only thing I can suggest is repair permissions (Disk Utility) and try again.

Is there an easy step by step process? Is this a Norton Utilities type function? I am not familiar with this. Thanks.

Use the utility Disk Utility in Applications > Utilities. Select your hard drive (by name). Click on Repair Permissions.

OK, I ran through the Repair Permissions thing and STILL when I go to run Scanwizard 5 V7.11 I get the same "OCR" module launch, which then pops up what looks like the Scanwizard program window, but that just sits there as the little pinwheel spins endlessly round and round, keeping me from being able to do anyhting else.

And to add to that last submission, I'll go on to say I actually trashed anything "OCR" related and still I get stuck at the launching of the software and hung up forever until I force quit or hard reboot.

I've run out of ideas. I'll send you back to the rest of the Techs, to see if someone else has any idea.

Hi Sam,
I just saw this posting and decided to have a crack at it if you are ready.
The chain of events I've read here seem to indicate that the permissions for your destination drive are not set correctly. If you click on the harddrive icon on the desktop and hold down the command key and i key (the letter i), an information menu will launch. At the bottom you will see "Ownership & Permissions:" It will list who can read and write to your drive. What does yours say? Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for taking a crack at this. It says under ownership and permission:
You can: read & write
Details:
Owner: System (with a locked icon next to it)
Access: Read & write
Group: Admin
Access: read & write
Others: Read only
Apply to enclosed items (radio button at bottom of all this)

P.S. In a moment of frustration I dumped any and all Scanwizard stuff off my computer, but still have the original download item (drv_sw5_v7_11_macx_jag_.ad.dmg) that I can start from scratch with.

Thanks.

OK, those settings are correct for the drive to accept new programming. First, from one of the former replies, I got the idea that you are using Norton Utilities. If this is correct, the word on the street is to dump everything they make and your drive will work better. I had been a long time Norton fan but lately their software makes a mess of the Macintosh system.
Second, scanning software from companies like the one you are using are not as successful in keeping up with changes in the system upgrades. I am a long time user and believer in VueScan. It will work on your scanner and does a remarkable job of getting true color and high resolution into your images. You can find it at www.hamrick.com
He usually upgrades it several times a month and as many as once a week! Go to his website and see if it is in line with your needs. I am a professional artist, photographer (jjividen.com) and have high standards for my work. This program does the trick. Let me know your thoughts on all of this and if you still want to work with the software you have, I will change direction and guide you through some tests to see if we can get it working, OK? Jerry

I checked out the site and it looks like I'll have to come up with 50 bucks if I want to use the software. That seems like a fair enough deal, but I'm just hesitant to shell out more money just now. I've already had to spend a couple hundred to upgrade to Office 2004, so I'm taking it slowly. I did check for Norton and it appears there is nothing Norton related ON my computer right now. However, while I've got your ear, I DO want to do some major house cleaning, especially since my once vast landscape of 10 gig is now shrunken down to a paltry 271 meg, and as you can imagine, I'm starting to get some warning messages about my disc being too full. Any suggestions for a good "cleaning" method/software?

I use a host of programs to keep things running tight so here goes...
"Diskwarrior" is a must. No debate. It puts the directory back into a perfect state. www.Alsoft.com
"Techtool Pro" is a must. Some debate. It checks hardware, drives, directories etc. and makes the Mac run at top performance. One of the best programs of its type out there. www.micromat.com
For taking the drive down and zeroing it out, use Disk Utility in the Utilities Folder in the Applications Folder on your harddrive. Works clean and fast.
To keep things running smoothly daily, I use MacJanitor (free) and install it into the startup folder. http://www.versiontracker.com
To defrag my drives, "iDefrag" is tops. The updates are free and it works...period. http://www.coriolis-systems.com/
"Printer Setup Repair" is my choice for keeping the printers printing. Very powerful and has saved me many times from throwing my printers out the window (two story...long drop)
http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/softw...ads/index.html
Cocktail is a great program to get the trash out of your system.
Web Page: http://www.macosxcocktail.com
"Tiger Cache Cleaner" is one of the most powerful cleaning agents for all kinds of messes that accumulate. I have had good experience with it.
http://www.northernsoftworks.com/

This list shows that I have spent some money on software to check everything under the hood of my dual G5, G4 (accelerated) and 17' Powerbook. Since I started using Macs in the late 80's, I have bought every major model at prices up to $6000.00 each. Usually, because I am always impatient, my computer and software were beta or even alpha state and many problems ensued. I have only had to take a machine into a service center ONCE! And that was due to a Belkin USB splitter burning out two of my keyboards, which the repairman could not even figure out.
So long story long, check out each of the utilities I mentioned and start using them on a regular basis and your machine will stay happy. I use my Macs very hard, from DVD creation, professional retouching and art, and Video production. Ahh, the quiet purr of a G5 cooling fan letting me know it is feeling fine and is ready for some hot action!.

Jerry, Thanks for all your great suggestions. I went ahead and purchased idefrag, but now that I want to run it, I cannot without booting from another disc. Can I do this from my Mac OSX disc?

Thanks,

Sam

Launch iDefrag and click on "Quick (online) which will allow a low level defragmentation of your drive. In order to do a complete job, yes you must boot from another drive or disk. It is kind of like floating down the river on a very small raft and you need to do some repairs. If you want to risk hitting your own foot with a hammer, it is better to beach the raft and get off to fix the problem. I will try to do it from my OSX disk and see if it works. Jerry
