Description:
I'm having difficulty getting MIDI software to use the single serial Modem/Printer port on my PowerBook. I've tried BOTH Opcode Music System (OMS) and Mark of the Unicorn's FreeMIDI. Both products will go through different amounts of steps before recognizing the problem (e.g., they will go through the entire auto-configuration routine, and say that nothing is attached to the computer while not saying that there is a serial port conflict). Ultimately, though, at some point, if I reconfigure one of the devices, like my QS8 keyboard, in the OMS Setup or FreeMIDI setup window, the program will return the error message: "The modem port is not available for MIDI. It is in use by another application."
"Test studio" functions and the ilk don't work -- no data is moving to or from my Mac to my keyboard. My normal setup is a direct serial connection from my keyboard to my Mac, but if I hook them up via an Opcode Studio 3 MIDI interface, the interface shows that data is moving to and from the keyboard, but not the Mac. So clearly there's a serial conflict going on.
What I can't figure out is where the conflict is coming from. I've tried running with all extensions and control panels off except OMS, and it still won't work. Opcode's tech database doesn't describe anything that would cause this other than a software conflict. AppleTalk is disabled, etc. So which software is using that port? I wonder if this is some confusion about the 1400's combination Modem/Printer port.
Thanks for your help.

Hello Peter,
I probably should not have clicked on your question, but since I have I think I should at least offer what I found on the Internet which might be of assistance in your quest to get up and running. Have you read the data on these tow web sites -- might they have any beneficial data to relate?

Although I do have MIDI cabling set between my wife's Technics Digital Organ and Technics Digital Piano unfortunately does relate to your problem. Based on somewhat similar problems I have had when I went to use Virtual PC on my Mac I found that the Modem had not hung up properly before going to WINDOWS and I used to get a message saying the connection was already in use when I knew it was not. The combination printer port on your 1400. If you find out how to solve your problem I would appreciate knowing myself.
