I like to tinker and in the last several months I've learned a lot, improved OS X a lot and messed up some things. So when I'm reloading the OS I don't want to bring those errors over. Is there a smart way of doing this? I've tried to put as many apps off the OS X partition as possible but when I reloaded that partition, all my settings seemed to be gone. I guess I need to copy the Library (which of course?) settings for each app over. But I don't want to bring over any errors. What a nightmare. Why can't this infernal OS keep the "library" or preferences together with the app? Is that so hard? Can I move them and keep them together? Do OS X designers file their papers by throwing them all over a room or in a file cabinet? One wonders why they don't want to keep thing together. It would be easy to have all the apps on a different partition from the OS. Windows has the same idiocy. Some (not all - just like OS X) apps can be on a different partition and updates and the operation of those apps run flawlessly. Others can't. Or work with errors - which is the worst of course. I'm surrounded by idiots...

Just kidding.....I realize that for such a complainer I should design an OS myself to learn how easy it is....HAR HAR.

Alright Keep your shirt on. Nice to hear though that someone else can stuff os x as well.
However the prefrence files are all kept in one of about 5 diffrent library files. nicley filed (In ABCD order). So I would get started in manually re setting your prefrences.
For the record OS X will run applications seamlessley from another partition. When you open a Mac Appliction and it uses prefrences then i creats it self a library file. this file is used whever the file is, as long as it's the same file.
What you did was took the App and left the Prefrences at the mercey of Disk Utility.
Time then for a slice of Humble Pie?
Anyho' it's the UNIX side OF OS X that is the fault.

Thanks for the quick reply Michael. Here are some things I didn't quite understand though.

Stuff? I've never heard this term before except in regards to the Stuffit app.
You said the preference files are in 5 different library files. in ABCD order. ?
System/Library/PreferencePanes seems to have preferences from System Preferences. Wouldn't it be nice if they called it that? Too much to ask. Better make it different - "Panes".........that'll confuse'em.
Under Users/Me/Library/Preferences there seems to be a whole wack of stuff. Is this my target for moving settings from my apps?
Any idea where my OS X Mail email is supposed to be? I can't find it. If I've lost my email, I'm a dead man. Though most of it is on a web server - no doubt the most important ones are not.

There are sevral Mac OS X Librarys:
-Mac HD/Library
-Mac HD/users/yourusername/library
-Mac HD/sytem/library/
And i think that's it.
For stuff relating to your User account you need to be looking in the Users library as this is where your user account information is stored.
And for the Record if you've got OS X with errors the technical word for what you did to it was to "Stuff it" and i don't mean make a .sit/.sitx file.

Understood.
Do you recommend having hidden files shown? Can that educate a user? Or can it only confuse and distract?

I would sugest to have them off. However it would be good to look round the internet and make sure you know what they all do. Sorry for the late reply.
