TICKET ARCHIVE -> Mini Mac Can't Hear Dial Tone

been trying to install dial-up on my father-in-law's new mini mac. Keeps telling me the internal modem can't get a dial tone even though I can hear one on the handset on the same line. I can't hear any activity on the line from the modem when it says it's dialling. Tried with different cables both of which work OK with a phone but not with the mac.
I've seen reference to similar problems with earlier macs: is this still a common problem?

First off...

You can hear a dial tone when you are using the regular phone right?

The problem is that when you pick up the phone to dial, you have to wait a second or two for a dial tone. The computer just starts dialing and it doesnt work, or the computer doesnt wait long enough for a dial tone.

Go into the dial up configuration settings, and put some comma's before the phone number, it will make your computer wait long enough for the dial tone, and if it still doesnt work. Just add more comma's.

Good luck

Since my father-in-law is 80 miles away, and using the same line for telephone conversation and dial-up, this is logistically something of a nightmare!

Tried with several commas but no change. If you have any further suggestions we'll try them, but unless it's simple I'm going to have to wait until I'm next over there.

thanks

well there are 2 inputs on your mac mini, one that has a pic of a phone, and one that has a pic of a phone line. Try switching them. I dont know if it will work but let's try, but its a step in the process of elimination.
