Hello all. I can't share files between systems.
Currently, my network includes:
2 wired PC's (both XP),
2 wireless Macs (OS X),
Airport Extreme Base Station
LynkSys Router
DSL Line
I have one wired PC and both Macs online, but can't see the PC in the workgroup on the Mac and vice versa. The folder on the PC is setup to share, and I assigned a workgroup name using the Network Setup Wizard. I also assigned the same workgroup name on both Mac's in Directory Access.
My DSL Line is connected to the Airport Station (DHCP and NAT) and then feed into the LynkSys router, which is set to automatically obtain an IP.
The wierd thing is that I had all systems sharing prior to moving my equipment. Ideally, I'd like to run both PC's headless. One, being utilized just for storage, the other to remote into to run the occasional Windows app.
The strange thing is that prior to moving my office, I had everything sharing, but I had no understanding of networking concepts. Now, I feel like I have a better grasp of how the network is setup, but I can't get the systems to share. (I guess I got lucky the first time). I'm still a bit lost...I have very limited networking skills.
Also, I'm getting an occasional error window on the Mac saying "a PPPoE server cannot be found" but it doesn't seem to effect my online status. I'm still able to surf the web and get my email. I also noticed that when I have the Network folder open on the Mac, it shows the "Servers", "Local" and "Workgroup" icons, BUT when my PC is turned on nothing appears in that same window on the Mac. As soon as the PC is off, teh icons show up again.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Am I on the right track having the Airport sit in front of the router or should the router sit in front of the Airport station?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I use the connect to server command to connect to my macs such as
smb://192.168.1.6
If you sent me some screen shots of your network setup on the Macs I might be able to get a better idea how things are set up
To do a screen shot just command shift 4 then drag around the window you need a screen shot of. This will create a file on your desktop.
send screen shots to
mikec@lawtonprinting.com
The forum will strip out attachments so you need to send to me direct
Hope I can help
Mike
Thanks Mike. I'll send over the screenshots now.
Not sure if this helps, but I also noticed that if I change my Airport Admin option to 192.168.1.1 addressing my PC is kicked offline. When I change it back to it's current setting of 10.1.1.1 addressing, the PC goes back online.
I tried your suggestion and tried accessing the PC via smb://192.168.1.100 but I'm not sure if that is the correct IP. I did an ipconfig on the PC to get that particular IP.
