Hi, I have a mac mini which is connected to the Internet through a bt speedtouch 330 (which is USB). I have then run a network cable from the mini into an airport express. I also have a powerbook G4 with airport in it, I want to be able to connect to the Internet from the powerbook through the airport express. I have set up a network and turned Internet sharing on the mini on, my powerbook says that it is connected to the Internet through airport but can't open any pages. The status light on the airport is flashing yellow.

Thanks

Hi,

A flashing yellow light normally shows the Airport express cannot make a connection for its Internet connection. It should be easy to fix though!

I'm assuming your Mini isn't part of any other network, and the only network you have is a network cable between the Mini and the Express?

Can you run the Airport Admin Utility on the Powerbook. It runs from the Utilities folder (you find this in the Applications folder). Check the configuration of the Express:

After running the utility select the Airport from the list, and then click configure. Select the Airport tab, and look at the "Configure TCP/IP" settings.

If it says "Configure: Using DHCP" the problem is the Express is trying to get an IP address using DHCP, but there's nothing on the network to hand out an IP address to it.

The best way forward is to set up th Mini and the Express with matching IP addresses manually.

On the Express, change Configure to Manually, and enter a new IP address, e.g.

IP Address: 192.168.2.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 192.168.2.1

On the Mini, open System Preferences and Click Network. For the Show: pop up menu, choose Built-in Ethernet. Click the TCP/IP tab, and for Configure IPv4: instead of Using DHCP choose Manually.

The enter an IP address of 192.168.2.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
leave Router: empty

On the Mini, in the Utilities folder again, open the Terminal program, and type

ping 192.168.2.10

Hopefully you will see a repeating message about bytes being succesfully sent, and the Mini and the Express are now talking. This should then let the Powerbook work wirelessly.

If this breaks something for you, just retrace the steps above and set the Configuration options back to what they were (probably DHCP).

Let me know how you get on, or if I can guide you through any of the steps.

I'm not sure what country you're in, but one thing I recommend is an ADSL router rather than a USB modem. They're pretty cheap now - about £35 in the UK. You would plug this box into the phone line, and then plug the mini and the Express into it. The mini and Express would pick up their network settings automatically, and the powerbook could browse wirelessly even with the Mini switched off. It also gives you the protection of a hardware firewall.

Good luck! And let me know how it goes.

Marcus
