DESCRIPTION:

My manager has a Compaq Presario 1620 notebook computer, with Windows 98 installed. He has a 56k modem, but cannot connect to AOL at speeds any higher than 31200. We followed their advice and even tried specifying the modem as "Hayes Compatible" because they said maybe the AOL 4.0 program was not recognizing his particular modem type, but he still doesn't connect any faster. Is there anything we are missing? We check to make sure his modem was set up in the AOL configuration to be at maximum speed, made sure we were connecting to a specified 56k phone number, and we made tried the number using another computer that connected above 46666 every time. I am at a loss as to what to try next. Do you know of anything that we can do? Thank you for your help.

Bonnie, thank you for using NoWonder tech support, I will do everything I can
to help you solve your modem problem. I would suggest you connect the Notebook
computer to another phone line and try again. Also, if the modem is a 56K,
select the next highest value listed in the dial-up properties for the
modem, i.e. 115,200.

Phone lines are different from house to house and block to block.
Each house line feeds into a nearby 'Telephone Exchange', (Those light
blue or green boxes on the side of the road)and they in turn are fed into
the local trunk line. If any part of the system has a weak link, it can
have a drastic effect on the quality of the signal, whether it be voice
or data. If your notebook computer connects faster at a friends house,
I would call your local phone company and complain about the line quality.
They will usually come out and check every part of the system for free that
is outside of your house. It could also be a wiring problem inside the house.
If you have paid for interior wire maintenance they will fix that for free
as well, if not, you will have to pay them to fix the inside wiring. How
old is the house that has the phone line that the problem occurs on?
