Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Powerbook 5300cs
RAM: 32meg
RAM Enhancer: Ram Doubler 2.x
OS Version: MacOS 8
Description:
I have a megahertze 28.8 xjack PC card modem and use Apple's Telecom software to run it and installed the version that came with MacOS 8. Occasionally, with no particular pattern I can detect, the Apple Serial Modem extension sometimes crashes during the boot up. When cleaning out my system folder after installing OS 8 I found several modem extensions and can't tell if they are current or not. I suspect there are some that aren't needed and the serial modem tool conflicts with them. Here they are: Apple Modem Tool-OS 8; Apple Serial Modem ext. Telecom 3.2.2; Generic PC card modem; Open Tpt Modem; x modem tool;SITcomeSEX/Y modem tool; SITcom SE z Modem tool; Apple Serial Modem GSM. Any idea what these all are for and which, if any, I can get rid of? Also I thought the documentation for OS 8 said no more support for GX stuff but here are a few GX files I think it installed. And the telecom software still seems to support GX. What's the story? Faxsender GX Tel. 3.2 and 2.3.3; QuickDraw GX and GX helper1.1.5; and Printershare GX QDGX 1.1.5. should I keep any of these?

Hi Linda, well the some of the files are needed and some aren't. It's mostly up to what you're doing. Here's the rundown:
Apple Modem Tool-OS 8: Communications Toolbox Extension. Used in Telecom programs and ClarisWorks Communications module
Apple Serial Modem ext.: Communications Toolbox Extension. Used in Telecom programs and ClarisWorks Communications module to connect through a modem on the modem or printer port.
Telecom 3.2.2: Part of the Apple Telecom Software
Generic PC card modem: Generic Setup for PC Card modems, keep if you use a PC Card
Open Tpt Modem: Open Transport Modem Shared library. NECESSARY TO USE OT/PPP
x modem tool: Apple Communications Toolbox tool for transferring files with the X-Modem protocol. A bit outdated unless you use command line BBSs
SITcomeSEX/Y modem tool: Aladdin System's SITcomm X-modem/Y-modem file transfer tool.
SITcom SE z Modem tool: Aladdin System's SITcomm Z-modem file transfer tool.
Apple Serial Modem GSM: Related to using a serial modem.
Faxsender GX Tel. 3.2 and 2.3.3
QuickDraw GX and GX helper1.1.5: All of these are related to QuickDraw GX, which
Printershare GX QDGX 1.1.5 is no longer supported in OS 8. They were
probably put there by your Fax software
installer. You can trash them.
As for the rest of the stuff, it's handy to have and most of it requires no RAM at startup. If you're not using them, drop them into the Extensions-Disabled folder of your System Folder. See if you can live without them before deleting them. If something does go wrong, you can always get the files off the OS 8 Cd. Aren't Macs great that way?
