Knowledge Level: Beginner

Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Performa 6115CD
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: System 7.5.5

Description:
Global Teleport modem that came with my daughter's Peforma 6115CD is not able to maintain connection with AOL 3.0. We updated to 3.0.1 and attempted to use Diamond's Supra Express 56SP modem. It would connect and sometimes operate on AOL, but more than likely would disconnect itself while using both internet and working with e-mail. Either a busy host message, or 'your session has been interrupted..no longer connected to Host" and would close out.

We worked both with AOL and Diamond, which downloaded an update. We still had frustratingly poor results, sometimes working well for reasonable period, and the next time the same disconnect problems, busy hosts, or worse yet the "whirling ball" hourglass which would not cease until in desparation, we would have to finally shut the machine down, or restart.

What type and brand of modem would you recommend that would be compatible with both my daughters Performa 6115CD to access and maintain contact with AOL, as well as access to the Internet?

Thanks for your assistance and early response.

We returned the Supra Express, and are not at a quandry as to which modem to purchase that would work well with our equipment.

Which Modem would you suggest we purchase

Charles,
Somehow, this doesn't really look like a modem problem to me.
More likely culprits:
- overloaded host (AOL)
- insufficient RAM allocated to AOL in your daughter's Mac
- poor telephone line
Of the above, the one thing you can fix is to allocate more RAM to the AOL program, and I would work on that first.
Now, the first question is: how much TOTAL RAM does the computer have? The standard amount of RAM for this model is 8 MB, not really enough for efficient internet use.
So, before we go much further, why don't you do the following:
- From the Finder, click "About This Computer..." under the Apple menu.
- Write down all the numbers you see when the information box opens.
- Get back to me with the numbers, and we'll take it from there.
