Description:
Hi --

My Global Village Teleport Gold II, which had never given me any problems until recently, has become only sporadically capable of detecting a dial tone. I'll try to send a fax or log on to my ISP, but although the phone line itself is working fine the modem can't seem to pick it up. Global Village is not supporting this 14,400 baud dinosaur anymore, so I can't even talk to anyone there about it without shelling out $30. Can you help me?

Thanks!

Hi Rick,
I have the same modem (but upgraded to 33.6 and then 56k). How long have you had the modem? Did you change any configurations recently? What Mac OS are you running? What model computer? Did you upgrade your system recently or install any new software? Check for extensions conflicts.
My GV Teleport Gold II came bundled with a Performa 6116 two years ago and has always worked fine with the original system software 7.5.1, but any time I tried doing an OS upgrade, the modem would not work. After trying everything else, I reverted back to 7.5.1 and the modem would work fine again. I thought it was a conflict with Open Transport, but never targeted the problem with OS 7.5.3 and higher.
Things to try:
Zap the PRAM.
Shut down computer. Disconnect modem cable and phone jack. Wait about 20 minutes. This will clear stale data. Reconnect cables and restart.
Do not install more than one version dial-up or fax software. That could cause conflicts.
Trash old preferences files (you will lose your settings). Reinstall all communication software. Double-check your settings.

Good luck!

Lisette
