KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Expert but stumped

PROBLEM: Hardware
COMPUTER TYPE: Generic
MODEL: Pentium 166
RAM: 64meg
OS VERSION: Windows 98
SERVICE PACK:

DESCRIPTION:

I am having problems using external serial devices such as Digital Cameras as long as my Plug-N-Play modem is installed. Reguardless of the com port I select for the device, the serial port isn't found and the ONLY way I've been able to use external serial devices is if I physically pull the modem out completely.

I have tried manually changing the resources for the modem in Device Manager and no combination seems to work. There are no device conflicts either.

Win98 automatically sets the Modem to Com1, interrupt 4, address 3F8. There are no Jumpers on the modem.

In Device Manager, under "Ports(Com & LPT)", it only lists Com2 and LPT1. Only when I yank the modem will it list both Com1 and Com2.

Also, and this may be related, everytime the modem "picks up" or "hangs up" the phone, it locks up all computer activity for a second. BTW, this is a Viking 56kFlex PNP modem.

Any assistance you can offer on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Make sure you disable COM1 in the CMOS (if the modem is internal) and verify which connection in the back of the computer is the COM1 and which is COM2. (COM 1 is usually the small 9 pin connection, COM2 is the 25 pin).

For now I will check some of my resources and research this question. Let me know if you correct the problem in the mean time. I should be doing my research sometime tonight. I will get back to you.

If you have any further information or questions, please feel free to drop me a line at scotth@nowonder.com .

Good Luck,
Scott
