Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Hardware
Computer Type: Apple
Model: PowerMac 6100/60
RAM: 32meg
RAM Enhancer: Ram Doubler 2.x
OS Version: MacOS 8

Description:
If my monitor (Apple 13"RGB) is failing can it effect the Mac. At startup the machine can chime more than once before starting to load extensions. If left the machine will restart itself sometimes. Also I have noticed that I can get a slight crackle and flicker of the screen and the display will lock out, the num, caps, and scroll lights on the keyboard will all come on and stay on, and the lights on the zip drive will flicker as if it is being accessed. This has coincided with the monitor colors having gone blotchy although the display is back to normal now.
All the above happened at once in the worst case but at the moment the machine has been stable for a couple of hours. I have tried a different monitor and it seemed to be OK. There has been no new hardware or radical software added. Any ideas you can have would be welcomed.
Many thanks.
Graham

Welcome to NoWonder Tech Support! I'm Dave. :-)

Try resetting your PRAM once and see if that helps.

Resetting PRAM

Since this PRAM can become corrupted and cause unexplained problems, you periodically need to reset the PRAM. Resetting or "zapping" the PRAM resets your Macintosh to the factory default settings for most Apple control panels including the General Controls, Keyboard, Startup Disk, Mouse, and Map.

To reset the PRAM under System 7.0 or later:

1.Choose Restart from the Special menu.
2.Press and hold the Command, Option, P, and R keys immediately after you hear the startup tone. Note: The caps lock key must not be down.
3.Listen for 3 startup chords.
4.Then release all keys.

After resetting PRAM, use the control panels to "re-customize" your Macintosh settings to the way they were before the PRAM was reset, if desired.
