Hi,
Using a G3 Blue and White, with 10.4.5.
Graphics Card: ATi Rage128 16mb.
When booting I get the grey screen with apple logo, then the screen goes black but the mac continues to boot succesfully. I have tried with a different monitor it works fine, and when I unplug and place in the other one after it has booted up it works fine then. When neither is plugged in, neither of them work after it has booted.
Thank You.

The monitor that goes black doesn't like the resolution that the g3 is switching to as it's booting up. It probably switches to some resolution that is out of range for the one monitor, but the other monitor is fine.
With the monitor that works with no problems,
Reset PRAM by holding down Command - Option - p - r as soon as you hear the boot chime.
You should hear a second boot chime.
(let go of the keys or you will reset the PRAM again)
after it boots up set the resolution to something middle of the road. most should be able to handle 800x600.
Shutdown completely, (which causes the display resolution to be written to PRAM)
switch to the flakey monitor, and maybe with any luck, that's all you need to do.

Tried changing the resolution, and refresh rate to the lowest and didnt get anywhere, also tried resetting the PRAM with the flakey monitor connected. Also resetted the PMU withe the flakey monitor connected and got no results.
I have noticed that with the flakey monitor connected during boot up, sending the mac to sleep and then turning back on I get signal out of range on the flakey monitor, and when plugging the working monitor in also get signal out of range.

Can you test flakey monitor on another computer. It could very well be the monitor.
Signal out of range is just what the monitor manufacture chose to display for that given circumstance. I'm not too worried about that, as long as when you wake it up at least with the good monitor it wakes up as well.
Some of these things you are encountering are features of the B&W G3. Booting with no monitor, waking from sleep with no monitor... These things are common with all B&W G3s, possibly the video card in them...
Is the flakey monitor, flakey on other computers as well?
If not, could you trade? Seems like the easiest solution.
You've tried almost everything else there is to try.
Only other thing I can think of is, take every other PCI card out except the video card (scsi?, ???)
If it still does it then, would you consider using the flakey monitor somewhere else?

Ive tried the flakey monitor on a windows xp laptop, dont have any other macs, and it works fine.
Unfortunaterly I cant swap the monitor, as its actually a LCD TV with a PC input, and the macs only location is next to it.
I have read somewhere that theres certain wires in the monitor lead that tell the mac wot resolutions etc. the monitor can dsiplay, cant remmeber or find the site, do you think it would be worth removin some pins from the plug to prevent these signals, and if so do u know which ones?
Only other solution is to use a VNC client as I have a windows xp computer fairly near it and their both on the same network, or try contacting the manufacture of the TV/Monitor.
Thanks for all your help so far.

I would say then it's some kind of compatibility issue with this particular monitor/TV.
Does the manufacture have any documentation on compatibility?
It could be some resolution that it can't handle that the g3 switches to in the process of booting up.

Interestingly I have just noticed that if I switch between TV and PC Mode, without putting the mac to sleep while booting with it connected, after switching I get the "Out of Range" message.
Couldnt find anything on compatibility, specification 1280x768 pixels, 16,722,216 colour (8 bit), adjustable settings in pc mode: Time, Phase, H.Posistion, V.Posistion and an automatic configuration option. Looking on the manufactures website there is different information for my tv:
http://www.beko.co.uk/default.asp?do...tGroupId=12729 saying its got a 1024 x 768 Resolution.
Neither of the pc options seem to yeild a result when changing them.

Fixed!!!
I set up a VNC on my mac, plugged in flakey monitor, used VNC viewer on my windows pc. Looked at the system prefrences and for some reason when a different monitor is plugged in it changes the settings, changed the refresh rate, and it now works.
Thanks for all your help!

No problem, glad I kinda was able to at least point you in the right direction, sorta. :-)
