Yesterday I noticed that I could not mount an audio CD on my machine -- it doesn't mount at all and is not recognized by iTunes. I tried a bunch of different audio CDs with the same problems.

I then tried a data DVD and it mounted just fine.

Data CDs also mount, but come up with folder icons instead of the usual CD-shaped one. Dragging them to the trash to eject changes the trash icon on the bar to the eject one, so clearly it knows it's a CD or mountable device.

This morning, when I attached my iPod (USB) I also noticed that it would not mount and is not being recognized by iTunes. Now, I am getting freaked out. When I look at the system profiler, the iPod is recognized as being in the USB port, but it does not show up on my desktop or in iTunes. Strangely, it does show that it is charging through the port.

Disk Utility is of no help, it doesn't show the iPod as being attached.

I have run Cocktail (just in case?) and rebooted from the system disk and used disk utility to verify and fix permissions and verify and repair the hard disk -- I actually found a few problems on the hard drive, but all have been repaired and the disk reads as fine now and restarts without issue.

Any ideas? Does this sound like a hardware or software issue? I'm starting to get more than a little freaked because this machine is my sole source of income and I'm a single parent. Ugh Ugh Ugh.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have.

Nevermind. I've fixed all the issues... after A LOT of extraneous work, I finallly started with a clean install and then did the combo upgrade back up to 10.3.9 Things seem to be working fine now. Hopefully that will last.
