TICKET ARCHIVE -> Mouse Cursor Problem

After moving around some software and downloading updates to iTunes and iPod, I found my mouse cursor was in some sort of mode where there was a "menu" icon next to it, and clicking on buttons in windows, (including the close, minimize and maximize buttons) did nothing, or opened meaningless, unhelpful menus. The same thing happened clicking on icons in the dock. I could still effectively click on items from the menus bar and from the drop-down menus that brought up. Restarting had no effect. There didn't seem to be any mouse settings that could effect this in the preferences menu.

What gives? And what can I do about it?

Looks like your Control key on the keyboard is stuck. Is that not the case?

That is not the case. Keyboard is clear of other objects and nothing is stuck.

Any other ideas?

Well, from your description, I can think of no other explanation. The menu icon you see next to the cursor is the one that appears when holding the control key, because when next you click, you will bring up a contextual menu (those that are meaningless to you, but clearly provide choices relevant to the context of whatever you're clicking on).

If you're on a desktop Mac, I encourage you to remove the control keys and makes sure none of the parts are sticking. On a laptop, or in general, just tap them several times to make sure.

In the meantime, I'll pass you back to the pool to see if there are other ideas.

Hi Elaine,

In System Preferences/Universal Access/Mouse there is an option called primary mouse button which switches the right and left mouse buttons. Could this be the cause?

I messed with the control button and the problem went away. Thanks for the help. It must have been sticking, even though it looked fine.
