Hello

First of all, a big thank you to all of the volunteers who run this site.

I have an Intel iMac with a wired mighty mouse. When I scroll over web pages, it makes a low ticking sound. How do I turn this off?

Thanks again

I don't think you can turn it off. It's coming from a speaker inside the mouse! The sound is not coming from your computer speakers. Apple actually installed a speaker inside the Mighty Mouse and wrote some very sophisticated software to simulate the scrollball sound and a sound when you squeeze the side buttons. The click may also be simulated. Unplug the mouse and try it and you'll not hear anything! There are no left-click and right-click actual buttons but a touch sensor, so the click sound is simulated as well.

I believe the hardware driver for the mouse handles the click sounds. To make it silent you might have to crack it open and cut the wires to the speaker! Someone may right some software to override the sound.

FYI - you can use any USB mouse you want with your Mac. i.e. Microsoft Mouse (shudder) or Logitech Mouse. All the buttons will be supported. I have the Laser mouse from Logitech. It's a cordless rechargeable mouse that uses a laser diode instead of a red LED. It has 5 buttons and the Logitech software driver allows full configuration under Mac OS X. (it'll work without the driver but the driver adds additional button programming). The laser is more accurate then a red LED and it feels very smooth and precise. It will work on more surfaces then a normal red LED optical mouse including a glass top table.

If the Mighty Mouse is annoying you, buy a mouse you like better. Different mice feel different in your hand so find something you like with the features you like.
