Just bought a Mac Mini so am new to OSX.
Using a wireless usb kb and mouse, I turned on mouse
keys in Panther and now my mouse just runs across the top of the screen. Tried the option key 5 times but it still will not see the mouse..
HELP!

If your mouse is freely in motion with Mouse Keys on, is one of your numeric keypad keys stuck? (Or maybe you just need to get a cat.)

Also, by "just bought," how many weeks ago are you saying?

Last week. The only time I can see the mouse pointer is when I first turn on the Mini. After it boots the pointer is gone, and none of my four cats can find it either.

Since you bought your mini last week, I'm curious why you haven't upgraded to Tiger yet. (Did you buy the mini before last Friday?, such that you'd have to spend $10 to get Tiger through Mac OS X Up-to-Date.)

Meanwhile, I suggest using the keyboard to navigate to System Preferences and turn off Mouse Keys. Do you need me to walk you through? Can you use the keypad at all to move the mouse?

Thank's for the help.
I think I bought the Mini about ten days ago. Do you think I
should upgrade to Tiger? as I am new to osx.

I can use the arrow keys to move form icon to icon on the desktop, but I cannot get to the dock or any of the areas where I can change settings.

You can use Shift+Command+A to open the Applications folder and then use the arrow keys and Command+O to open System Preferences. Inside, you might be able to use Tab to move to Universal Access. If not, you need to press Control+F7 to change the setting that allows you full keyboard access.

Once you get to Universal Access and show it (with Return), you can Tab to the Mouse section and turn off Mouse Keys.

As for an upgrade, the $10 offer for Tiger won't last long and it'll be worth your while, especially as a new user, to have it's feature set available to you.

Thank's to you we figured out that the wireless mouse was not working because of other wireless devices in the room.

Do you think the bluetooth wireless mouse and kb work well, and
what about the two button I am hearing about?

I love my Apple Wireless Mouse. I don't know much about the keyboard and only remember some gripes about problems using it in Single User Mode (UNIX prompt at startup). I think it now supports all startup shortcuts, which is why Apple is now offering it as a sole keyboard option on new desktops.

As for two buttons, are you referring to the recurring rumor that Apple would announce one? That's been going on for at least four years now, and I don't think it will ever come to fruition. One of the main reasons is tech support; do you know how difficult it is to tell someone which button to click?, especially on Windows where the only way to do some tasks in some scenarios is via a contextual menu. Once I tell a user to right click, he wonders which button to use when I simply say click.

Anyway, the short of it is that Apple has done such a good job with the Human Interface Guidelines, and developers have adhered to them enough that keyboard shortcuts are mostly standard among similar operations, that they're easier to learn and use than any contextual menu. (Even the new dictionary panel in Tiger is accessible by a universal shortcut, and it's really cool to have instant access to the Oxford English Dictionary.)

So, what other devices were interfering? Glad I could help.

Ben,
Had an Gateway wireless mouse about 4 feet away, and it caused the pointer to run around the top of the display.

I bought this Mini because I got me a new 46" DLP
tv so I could use a browser to watch my Liquor Store from home.

Built me a super high-res 8 cam DVR at the store and it's the
best I have seen anywhere except that the people who wrote the
web server interface for the DVR now says I cannot use any apple systems to look at it. Has something to do with activex crap needed in Ie6.

Makes me mad, but I will play with the Mini for a while
anyway.

Used to support SCO systems for years, and still love Linux
under which I have a very good POS system running at warp
speed. ( OSX will take some getting used to, as I am always root in all my systems.)

Have a good weekend man and thank's mucho for the help...

anyway.
