I have a desktop G4 and laptop G4 and I need to transfer data between them often. With my current configuration, I can see my laptop and mount it by choosing "network" in the sidebar. I have no problem moving data from the laptop to the desktop in this way, buy when I try to move data from the desktop to the laptop, I get a pop-up that says "the desktop (or other folder) cannot be modified". Why does this happen, and how can I get around it?
Thanks,

Howdy!
Do you try to access the laptop the same way you access the desktop mac?
I'd make sure file sharing is activated on both computers (sometimes turns off) and that you can see the computer you want to connect to in your Go/Network list.
It sounds like you're also logging into the user account instead of the entire hard drive. When you log in, don't access the user account (whatever you've named it) access the Hard Drive ("your name" Hard Drive). Maybe this will eliminate the "cannot be modified" issue.
Let me know if this helps at all.
I think if you unplug the laptop from the network and then plug it back in frequently you might encounter this situation more than once, at least I do with my G3 Powerbook Pismo and iMac G4 17".

Thanks for your help, Nat. I do have file sharing activated for both machines. I used to be able to access the Hard Drive as you mentioned, but it doesn't show up anymore. I've done the plugging/unplugging thing. Could you walk me through the setup from scratch? Maybe I could delete that part of the network and start over. I can still access my pc fine from the desktop. Also, do you have a site or anything up with the work you do? I'm in the music biz too. My stuff's at
www.vinceevans.com and the publishing site is
www.creativemusicteam.com
Thanks again for your help,

So how are you hooking up your computers, via a router or some other way?
I have an old band site you can check out:

So what do you play?

Hey Nat,
Thanks again for your help. I checked out the band site. Great tracks, man! I play keys and sing......Berklee grad '87, toured a lot through the mid nineties with various artists. I've got some audio files at my publishing site:
www.creativemusicteam.com
I have three computers here, all connected to a linksys cable router and linksys cable modem.
I'm using my desktop G4 as the main computer and trying to manage files to and from the other two.
I can see the PC and move files in either direction just fine. I used to be able to do the same with the laptop, but not anymore.

Hmm. Strange. Well, you have the update, but they're saying there were "Connect to Server" issues resolved with 10.4.1:

Have you created a "Location" on your laptop that is set for your home network?
