Specifically I cannot move backup data from Quicken 3 to Quicken 5 in OSX.
Also I cannot move data in Appleworks 6 in 9.2.2 to Appleworks 6 In OSX.
I have been using Computers for 10-15 years but OSX has been confusing me no end. HELP

I can share what works for me...
I have recently opened an old Quicken file that I last modified with Quicken version 3, and opened right up with Quicken 2004, which is the latest version (13) that I have installed. Quicken 2005 is actually version 14, so both your versions are really old. The oldest Mac version that Intuit has any support for, is version 6.
AppleWorks 6 - if you have installed the last update for AppleWorks, which is version 6.2.9, then you have a version that will open in either OS 9 or OS 10, from the same application. If you have some files that you know SHOULD open with AppleWorks, then start AppleWorks, and drag-and-drop the file on the AppleWorks icon in your dock, This should open the file, if a simple double-click does not work.
Let me know if you have more questions
