Please help, I am a complete Mac newbie but have been given the daunting task of ensuring that our Windows image server still operates when we move to OSX from OS9.
However, there are further complications. We are using 'Quark 5' with 'Dave' to access images on a Windows Server. Our aim is to move to Quark 6 and remove Dave (and its licence costs) from our architecture.
I would appreciate it immensely if someone could tell me if
(a) what I have been asked to do is possible and (b) what steps do I need to take to make the transition from OS9,Quark5, Dave, Win Server to OSX, Quark6, Win Server e.g. do I need to merge the resource and data forks somehow ?

Hi Paul,
I apologise for the delay in response. What you are asking is quite a complicated question, so I ask that you be patient as I try and work it out with you. At any time along the process, please do not hesitate to reply asking for more clarification or to pose any concerns you may have.
The move from OS9 to OS X is definitely daunting for many of us, but you will find that in taking the step, you gain many benefits, including stability and increased network compatibility.
For a start, may I query as to what are you currently using Dave for? You may or may not be aware, but OS X gives the option to connect to standard Windows file shares directly from the Finder - it is as simple as clicking a menu and selecting "Connect to Server...". In this regard, I think you will find that you do not need to make any changes to the Windows server itself, as you will surely benefit from Apple's big push towards Windows compatibility, particularly in the latest releases of OS X. They have done much of the work already for those of us who operate in Windows/Mac environments.
To answer your questions, what you have asked is definitely possible. Its hard to say how easy it is going to be, but it is definitely viable. Secondly, you should not have to make any changes to the data and resource forks. Although the preferred method of Mac OS X is to use extensions (like Windows does) it still falls back on the old resource/data style of doing things if it cannot determine an extension. For this reason, you will most likely find that no changes need to be made in this regard.
Hopefully I have provided some helpful information that will assist in guiding your decisions. I trust that you will read through it, and reply with any further queries or concerns that you have.
Thank you for choosing macosx.com,

Hi David,
Thanks for your reply, it was useful and I have passed your comments on to the Mac users. Our user suspects that when double clicking on an image (previously created in OS9/Quark5/Dave/Win Server) it will not be able to distinguish which application to use when opening it.
I will build an OSX, quark 6 workstation and try to access our images on the windows server that were previously created using OS9/Quark 5/Dave.Hopefully, all will work Ok as you suggest.
To answer your question we are using Dave to access our images on a Windows server. We were using Quark 5, OS 9. I was led to believe that OS9 and windows did not talk without Dave in the middle to handle the resource and data forks. I am new to the Mac environmnet and can easily be misled!
Once again, thanks for your reply.
Paul.

Hi Paul,
You were correct in thinking that OS9 could not talk to Windows without the intermediate software - fortunately it has since been resolved in OS X and should work fine for what you want to do without any additional software.
Its a good idea you have to try it out with a test machine - I'll leave this ticket open for the time being incase you have any more questions during the process.
David.
