I have just bought a new iMac and have noticed that whenever i click on a mp3, wmv, mpeg, avi, etc, the preview screen for the file that normally pops up in the Finder's browser closes/ crashes automatically. I'm not sure what the problem might be to be honest, i have tried mac help but couldn't find any information within it that could help.
I transfered all my files directly from my old iMac (indigo) via a Firewire cable, i never had this problem before on my old machine but is it possible a glitch or virus carried over from the old mac?
The files all work correctly when i drag and drop them into my media player (VLC player) or if i open them in Quicktime, but unless i select multiple files to drop into VLC clicking on a single file will cause Finders window to crash and close.
Does this problem occur if you set iTunes and Quicktime as the default player for these file types? It sounds like a conflict with the VLC software and the Finder to me. If the problem disappears after setting iTunes as the default I'd log a bug report with VLC
iTunes and Quicktime are the default players on both my old and new iMac's, like i said, this problem never occured on the old machine but it happens whenever i click on a single media file.
The way i use VLC is i have to first open the program and drag and drop the media files directly into it before it will play.
I'm re-opening this ticket for other volunteer techs to offer assistance. I don't know what is causing your problem.

This sounds like an issue with VLC more-so than with the Mac OS. VLC is a beta edition of software and will contain bugs. Especially-so when an update is performed to the OS or system programs like QT.
Have you reset VLC yet [under preferences]? If not, try that first. The next step would be to
delete VLC's configuration file if the reset doesn't work. Reboot your machine after each of those steps.
Most likely neither of those will work, but they're worth a shot before the next choice. You'll need to downgrade your version of VLC (you have 0.8.6 / 0.8.6b I assume). Per their support forums, the quicktime upgrade is the culprit. The newest version of VLC doesn't play well with the latest QT version. If you downgrade VLC to
version 0.8.0 or
version 0.8.4 it should work again. Hopefully they'll fix the issue with their next update.
[b]Note: Both older versions are PPC code, so they'll be running under emulation on Intel based Macs . . . but, at least they'll run.
