Hello, i am using OSX 10.4.2 and i just purchased a sony DVD cam, i cant move my video to my mac directly cause the computer wont see it, so i have to go thru my PC first and move all the video to the PC as MPEG format, but when i move that to my MAC, i cant open it, quick time cant read it, how can i change the format of my video from MPEG to Avi or any other format that my mac would read, and is there anyway i could trasfer my video directly from my Sony DVDcam to my MAC, or do i HAVE to go thru my PC.

thank you

Layal, welcome to macosx.com

DV Camera's are only supported by iMovie if they are connected via Firewire.
So if this Sony is usb only -> forget it
And most of the time, Sony does not include any mac compatible software

A friend of mine, to which someone asks the same question on a post in a French forum, responds me something like:
------------
MAC does not like USB transfers, nor the awfull Sony software that they include with their camcorders. However, you can place the finalized disk into your DVD drive on your MAC and rip the VOB files off the disk (for instance using MacTheRipper), and convert them into a useable format (for instance using fffmpegX). This is a very tedeous and annoying job, so if you're planning to do intense editing, I wouldn't go with the DVD format.
I would consider the MiniDV format...gives you the same quality anyways!
-------------------

I know that's do not solve your problem, but it is true.
In simple words: Sony does not like Apple's ITMS success, so it makes all to to marginalize mac Users

MacTheRipper

Insert your DVD, launch MTR.
Does it scan the DVD ? Does the DVD mounts on the Desktop ?
If no, which messages ?

ffmpegX

Do you have install the 3 components of ffmpegX ?

I do not know the structure of the DVD coming out from the Sony, but the idea is to use MTR to extract one individual stream (vob) out of the DVD and re-encode it using fffmpegX
