Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: Software
Computer Type: PowerComputing
Model: PowerTowerPro 200
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
Our Macintosh-only office is connected to an NT server using Microsoft Exchange.
My machine was upgraded to Mac OS 8.1.
My copy of Microsoft Exchange Client for Macintosh 5.0.1 stopped working reliably. Sometimes (not always), an email message would not open; error message read: "The item could not be displayed. You've exceeded the maximum amount of text." I checked these messages with the sender, there was nothing unusual about them, they were not long messages.
I updated Microsoft Exchange Client for Macintosh 5.0.1 to version 5.0.3. It does not work at all.
As Exchange 5.0.3 is opening, it delivers this error message:
"The Inbox Assistant could not be started. Rules will not be processed. A required action was not successful due to an unspecified error."
Then, Exchange opens and presents the list of email messages.
When I attempt to open an email message, I first receive this alert:
"The item could not be displayed. You need more memory or system resouces. Close some windows and try again."
I hit "OK," then this error message immediately follows:
"The command you specified could not be carried out. The action could not be completed."
Email does not open.
The machine has 256MB of onboard RAM. The Microsoft Exchange Client application has been allocated 30MB of application RAM. No other programs are running when these error messages occur.
The really strange thing about all this is that two other Macs in our office have also upgraded to MacOS 8.1. They are running Exchange 5.0.1 without any problem. I cannot fine anything outstandingly different between my System files and theirs.

Hi welcome to nowonder

It is possible your finder preference got corrupted and the preferences for MS exchange. I would throw those away and zap your pram and rebuild desktop to see if that helps. By allocated 30 MB of ram to MS Exchange is that under the get info? If this dont work I would throw away/save to a disk your Microsoft Exchange and copy from one of the other machines. Also compare your extensions to see if you have anything different then their computers that may cause conflicts. Let me know - thanks Sharona@nowonder
