Hi all, HELP!!!!..
I've been having Multiple crashs everyday. I"ve run the hardware test from the installation CD and that had no problems. Tech tool pro found nothing on the ram either.
But when I run the Disk Utility This is what I get below. 1HFS need repair. How do I fix it and stop it crashing all the time? Would a restore and replace fix it or should I flatten it and start all over again?
I'm running G5 10.4.6 everything is uptodate.
Thanks heaps
Nicky

Before you do anything else, backup all of your data. Anything on your harddrive which you cannot download or reinstall from disk should be backed up. If you can back up the entire volume that is ideal. Otherwise, make sure that anything you care about and cannot otherwise replaced is backed up.
Have you had Disk Utility try repairing the disk? To do this, you need to start the computer from the install DVD for 10.4.
> restart the computer with the install DVD in the machine and hold down the 'C' key
> I think it asks you to pick a language, so do so
> when you get to the Installer screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer application menu
> select the relevant volume and choose 'Repair Disk'
> if Disk Utility says it has repaired the volume succesfully, run Verify Disk to make sure - if problems are still found, run Repair Disk again and repeat
> if Disk Utility says it cannot repair the volume, try running it once more - if it keeps failing at the same point, this isn't going to work
If this is successful, run Verify Disk Permissions. If problems are found, run Repair Disk Permissions and repeat until Verify Disk Permissions finds no further problems.
Let me know how that goes. If Disk Utility cannot repair the volume, there are other utilities you might want to try, but hopefully Disk Utility will do the trick.

Hi CFR,
thanks for your help. I've backed up and tried the Disk utility from the installer, takes a while but it seems to have help it. It doesn't crash so often anymore. I'm still getting the same message from the Disk utillity on the Hard Drive though, not sure why, will run the disk utillity from the CD a few more times. FIngers crossed..
Thanks
NIcky

If after multiple runs, you don't get "Volume OK" from Disk Utility, you still have a serious problem.
You could try running Tech Tool Pro from the CD to see if that can fix the issue. Use the same procedure to start from the CD as you used to start from the install DVD (but with the Tech Tool Pro CD in the drive, of course). If that seems to help, try repeating verify and/or repair with Disk Utility.
As long as you are getting problems reported by Disk Utility, you should continue to be concerned. If Tech Tool Pro doesn't help, there are other utilities you can try. I would probably reopen the ticket at that point since I don't have experience with them. (I haven't used Tech Tool Pro either, but since you already have that, it seems worth a go.) Disk Warrior is supposed to be very good, for example, but somebody whose used it might be able to tell you if it might be very good for your particular issue before you spend money on it.
If you can't solve the problem this way - or if you'd prefer not to - I'd recommend reinstalling. I would recommend a clean install (i.e. erase the disk and start from scratch) as the safest option and the one most likely to address the root of the problem.
Please let me know how you get on.

Hey CFR,
Thanks.... I tried it all and nothing fixed it so I had to try the clean install. I've erased everything and started again. I ran disk utility again and the problem is still there. It's going to have to go to the doctors, I have nothing that is fixing it..
Thanks a heap for your help..

I'm going to re-open this to see if anybody else can suggest something helpful, but I suspect you may be right about needing to take it to the doctor. If you've erased and done a clean install and you still get the error, you maybe dealing with a hardware issue rather than a software one. But I know *nothing* about hardware, so I don't wish to take my word for it.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Reopening... (CFR)

Well, before going the the 'Hardware Doctor', I would try DiskWarrior from Alsoft.
If TtechTool has not solved the problem, then DW is your latest chance.
And If DW fails, yes, it is time for hard drive replacement

Hi Philippe & CFR
Thanks for all your help. I'm waiting on the Disk warrior to arrive but when I went onto apples support to try find a number to call and ask If I can get a new hard drive underwarranty. I found something - Have and behold it was very well hidden as I've looked for a solution a million times... but it's worked..
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
I now get a nice green: Volume passed verification. I'm not certain it's fixed everything as the machine is still a bit shaky from time to time. But it's a start.
Thanks again
Nicky
