I have a Mustek 1200 CU scanner. The cd has mac os classic software but no os x...of course it's like 4-5 years old. Is there any way to get it to work?

Hi,
Thanks for using macosx.com for your tech support needs. I"m Eric and I will be assisting you today.
Unfortunatly Mustek does NOT make a Mac OS X driver for this scanner. I checked the web site for you.
Sorry

Is there like any universal software that will work with it or do i need to get a new scanner?

I was unaware of any, but another technician wrote this note:
Try VueScan.
http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html
Your scanner is not in the list of supported scanners but it might just work.
Good Luck,
You can try that and see if it works -- let me know how it turns out.

No it doesn't work but usually when you first plug it into a computer a green light comes on when the operating system enables it and it does when i plug it into my mac. so there must be some kind of drivers installed.

OK, I just found this on the site:
I confirm that my MUSTEK scanner is now working within IMAGE CAPTURE (in OSX 10.4.2) after installing the various SANE libraries, binaries etc.
For your own info, the installation process is fairly straightforward, but there is a lot of reading on the SANE website to make sure that you install the necessary files relevant to your system and scanner etc, and also that the various binary files are installed in the correct order for the whole thing to work.
Nevertheless, it was well worth the effort and it works correctly.
The URL for the SANE software is
http://www.sane-project.org/
I wouild try that and then use the IMAGE CAPTURE and see if you can get it up and running. Keep me posted

Sorry, I wasn't sure of your experience level and didn't want to explain something you might already know. It looks to me like you will need to download several different things. First, the "backend" files and libusb files. Go to
http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/ and click the SANE Backends for Tiger link. After this downloads and installs do the same for the libusb for Tiger and the SANE Preference Pane (this makes it easier to work with I believe) Finally download and install the TWAIN SANE Interface -- from there you should be able to start up the Interface and (hopefully) select your model of scanner. If you need more assistance let me know and I'll see if I can clarify of if need be we can try a remote assistance which I've never done, but we can try it out.
