Hi,

We have Yahoo Small Business service here at work. I have written to Yahoo also, but they may not be that familiar with the various Macs. They don't seem to be.

Anyway, I work on Windows machines for my department and they always seem to have issues, so I'm pretty familiar with their idiosyncracies.

We have a couple of Macs and because they rarely have problems I am not very familiar with them.

Here's my problem.

Mac G4 OS 9.2 Netscape 7.0

I am trying to set up a POP email account in Netscape 7.0

There is POP accout already exisiting. I need to set up a second account using Yahoo Small Business
incoming and outgoing mail server.

The exsisting account has a different (from Yahoo Small Business) domain, different incoming and outgoing mail servers.

When I type in the name of the Yahoo Small Business outgoing server, I get the error message "Enter a valid host" I am entering the server name exactly as Yahoo says to do on their web site,
that is
pop.bizmail.yahoo.com
This server name works fine on Windows machines. Since Yahoo doesn't say otherwise, I am assuming it is the correct name to use for Macs also. Am I missing something?

Or is the problem due Netscape 7.0 not allowing more than one set of mail servers? Is it 9.2? Is it a combination of both?

User wants both accounts. How do I fix this?
Upgrade Netscape? Upgrade OS? Use another email client for the second account?

Please help. I don't know what to do and most importantly, I don't know enough as yet.

Thank you very much.

Netscape does have its limitations in the mail side of things. You do have several work around, though.

Try using a different email client. Eudora can handle several mail accounts as well as Outlook Express. You can run either one to get all the emails from both accounts.

Or you can update the computer to run OS X and use Apple's Mail which can handle several email accounts.

Strange that Netscape works on one but not the other.

Try this:
Delete the Netscape 7.0.2 (remember to delete the user folder)

Now download and install Netscape 7.0.1
http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/archive70x.jsp

Give that version a try and see if it works.

You might have to try an even older version. I don't have access to my G4 OS 9 machine at this time to do some experimentations, but I will stick with you on this.

Here's the thing. First of all, I asked another question last Thursday. That question disappeared without me getting a response.

I'll try again.

I am still struggling with Netscape and a particular Mac.

I was able to finally get Netscape 7.0 pop email account to work on our iMac, OS 9.2.2.

I also able to get Netscape pop email to work on our G3, OS 9.2.2 by downloading Netscape 7.0.2

Now I still can't get Netscape pop email to work on our G4 OS 9.2.2 I downloaded and installed Netscape 7.0.2 on the G4 and tried exactly the same settings as I used on the G3. I can receive messages but I can't send.

User insists on using Netscape mail so I have to get it solved. It is incredibly frustrating. User does not want to use the iMac or the G3 that the #### Netscape pop email works with.

You're my last hope.

Thanks

Cheryl,

Thank you for helping me work through this. I appreciate your efforts. You are a good person!

I followed your instructions as far as I could. I deleted Netscape 7.0.2 and the User folder.

I downloaded 7.0.1 from
http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/archive70x.jsp

StuffIt Expander unzipped it OK but then when I tried to install it, I was asked for a password. Now, I don't know if that is the Netscape browser web page asking for it, or if our G4 somehow was asking for a password.

I'm not clear on the keychain thing yet. I usually work on Windoze machines so much of the Mac stuff is new to me. Although I must say, I generally like Macs better and the more I learn, the better I like them. The reason that I don't know much about our Macs is that they rarely have any problems. Whereas our Windoze machines are like spoiled children. They're always whining and stomping their feet about something.

Anyway, if the G4 needs a password to install programs, why did it only ask for one with the downloaded Netscape 7.0.1? It didn't ask for one when I previously installed Netscape 7.0.2. Since I didn't have a password that the Netscape 7.0.1 installation was asking for, I reinstalled Netscape 7.0.2.

It seems to me that one needs to understand the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of several versions of Netscape, several versions of Mac operating systems, the relevant incoming and smtp servers, and Yahoo Small Business pop email and how all of these interact to be able to set up a pop account correctly.

I corresponded with Yahoo by email and by phone. They tried but couldn't help. They gave me hints, anyway. Netscape ignored my completely and never did answer my emails.

You folks and especially you in particular, have been, by far, the most helpful.

I am writing you such a long response because I wanted you to know the whole saga and how I finally solved it. I am hoping it might help some others in a similar situation.

It was the Netcape Profile Manager that caused all the grief! Since all of our machines, both Windoze and Macs have only one profile (default) associated with Netscape, it is not something I usually think about. Whenever Netscape was originally installed on all the machines (not by me)Netscape asked about the profile - but not since. Apparently when one upgrades Netscape, it must grab the profile info from the previous version, at least on the G4. I was not asked about the profile from Netscape when I upgraded from Netscape 7.0 to 7.0.2 on the G4.

I just knew that some setting somewhere was taking precedence over the settings I was typing into the Netscape mail and newsgroups settings. I just kept poking around and thinking about it. It occurred to me that when I tried to and succeeded in setting up the Netscape pop email accounts on our iMac and our G3, both with OS 9.2.2, the same OS as on the G4, I had completely cleaned out any files and folders associated with any employees. In the process, I must have deleted the existing Netscape profiles. So when I upgraded the iMac and the G4 to Netscape 7.0.2, of course it asked me to set up and profile. That's what was different about what I was doing with the G4. There were still old profiles in there that were messing things up. I deleted them, and voila, the G4 can now SEND as well as receive pop email.

It was a long torturous process for me but I, with your help, finally came to a solution! Now maybe the Profile manager aspect of this is so basic that you or other folks didn't even think to mention it. But as I've said, working on Macs is new to me and the Profile manager was not an issue on the Windoze boxes.

Whew!

If I'm not clear enough, please feel free to write to me again and/or distill what I have discovered. I do sincerely hope that it can help someone else.

Thanks again for all of your patience and help.

Christina

Christina,

I was under the assumption that Netscape was never installed on those machines. Next time I will remember to include to do a search for Netscape profile before doing a clean install.

I am glad you got things working smoothly and your users are happy.
