After I tried to Print off of a CD-rom that held images from Photoshop, the computer froze. And when I tried to access my CD-rom, it said the file was corrupt and I lost ALL my data.
What happened? and What can I do to recover my data and prevent this from happening again.
I have a G4 Powerbook.

Charlie, welcome to macosx.com
(1) Maybe some scratchs on the burned surface of the CD appear due to normal manipulations/storing actions, ...
CD or DVD are not a eternal media (tapes are better and are often choosen for backuping in profesionnal world)
It exists some tools for cleaning/repairing the surface of CD
http://www.x10.com/electronics/av_repair_kits.html (just an idea)
Sometimes, the simple fact to clean the surface with a dry tissue can remove fingers print or equivalent
If this works -and if you own a burner- copy all the data of the CD on your hard drive and put them to another blank CD-R
(2) Do you face the same problems with other burned Cds ? With commercial CDs -music, .. ?
Could you try to simple copy the file to the Desktop than open it instead of accessing it directly from the CD ?
(3) Perhaps would it be interesting to use a CD lens cleaner -you know the one one we use to clean the car/home cd player- to clean your optical drive ?
(4) I make a copy of each of my official software delivery (Photoshop, games, Apple Install Disc) and I use first the copy; when the copy begins to be scratched, I use the official CD. This tip may not work on some protected CDs (mainly games)

Philippe

THanx for replying..
The problem is though, the Cd that I used was brand new. It couldn't have scratched that quickly.
Are there any hardware problems or system problems I should be aware of?

Does this occur for all CDs you burned ?
If yes, how do you burn them ?

No. It just happened that one time. I usually burn them the typical way, through the Burn Folder, (not Toast)

So, Charlie, if this had occured for only CD, perhaps the CD itself presents some problems (defects in the burnable surface,...).
This can occur: I already faced this.
That's why, for important CDs, it is important to test them immediately (copy to the Desktop, play the movie, double-clik on a document, ...): if a problem occurs, then throw away the just burned CD and re-burn a new case.
I do not think you've a hardware problem, as the problem is only located with one CD..so you cannot reproduce the problem on a regular base.
In your case, I would try to read the CD on another mac or a PC, transfer all the file onto the machine the CD works and burn a CD on this machine or find another way to copy back the files onto your Mac
For important CDs (orinal games CDs, original softs,..), I would recommend to make two copies and test them; use one of these copies daily and use the second one if the first one has problems.
