Grafxgurl, welcome to macosx.com

Could you try to download the VLC player (www.videolan.org) and see if this player can play the DVDs Apple's DVDplayer cant ?
By the way, can plya those DVDs on your home DVD player (if you have one ) ?
Regards
Philippe

Well, I've heard that zone 1 drives (US + Canada) have difficulties to mount/play other zones than 1 (a kind of protection).
Is the error arrives systematically for DVDs other than region 1 or also for region 1 ones ?

???
Do you have already play other region DVD so that your receive each time a message "your drive is region 1, but you want to play a region x DVD. Do you want to witch your drive to region x. Yes/No"
Well, because, such a switch is allowed 5 times, after what the drive is definitvly locked on the region code of the latest played DVD

Or have you update your drive firmware to be freed of region locks ?

I must admit that, as far as commercial DVDs are concerned, I never play them directly in the drive (because I come from an old slow 400 Mhz G3), so I prefer to rip it on my hard drive (using for instance MacTheRipper and therefore being able to get rid of protection), then play the VIDEO_TS folder (a folder made my MTR which is a image of the DVD)inside VLC

But as ther DVD does mount itself...

Before 10.4, does this work ?

Could you try to repair permissions on your drive as described here ?
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html

Could you also download macjanitor (as described in the following article in "Easy way") to launch the maintenance scripts ?

If this not help, go one step ahead by downloading Yasu

to clean caches

its asked me that just once before... and i had to change it to another region . it gave the same problem before 10.4....i haev mac the ripper too.. but the thing is that when i put the dvd in and start Mac the ripper...it says no disc inserted or dvd tray empty....its like...as if.. theres nothing in the tray.. no dvd icon even shows up at all!

what will macjanitor do?...

Macjanitor will launch the maintenance scripts which are automatically ran by your OS if the Mac is on between 03am - 05am; if not, it is important to run them manually through freewares, like Macjanitor

Well I spoke about macjanitor because these tools can solve bindings problems with library...I want to determine if your problem is software or hardware.

Is your drive a combo or a superdrive ?

Is there a common point (brand, movies company, ..) with all the DVDs that fail ?
