I've had this hard drive for about a year and a half, and the other day I plugged it up via firwire and... NOTHING! I've been turning it on and off to get some type of response, but still nothing happends. I hear it spinning but it doesn't mount. I have a gang of stuff on there and needless to say, it's important....
Is there any thing else I can try or is there some type of software I can use to get this thing to mount.... Or just what would the trouble be...?????
Thanks so much!!!!

Jaythan,
with this drive plug in, could you launch DiskUtility (Applications/utilities): does DU see the drive ?

Well one step in process of elimination would be to try it on a differant computer. Try it on a windows, then a mac. Usually if it doesnt work then, tehre is a good chance the drive is bad. That sucks about losing all your data you need!

Yes! I've attempted to mount it on other macs and even a PC but NO LUCK! Is there something else I can do?

i am sure that you can mount it under linux, but you would have to use the distro knoppix and do it under pc. And it is very hard, i would recomend finding a linux technician, and asking him how to mount a hard disk under linux, or possibly under mac. I dont know if you can mount it like that under mac, but mac is based of linux. There is a chance you may, or may not be able to mount it. It sounds like your partition table is damaged. There is a chance you might not be able to retrieve the data.

Sorry to be blatantly obvious, but have you tried a different FireWire cable? They DO have a lifespan and tend to wear out.

yes!

You have tried it on a PC, swapped Firewire cables, and tried finding it on DiskUtility. I think the next step I would take would be to remove the drive from the enclosure and add it as a second drive in a Tower Mac or PC. If after setting the jumpers and booting up the Tower Mac or PC it still does not see the drive then it's very likely you have a bad drive. If you can see the drive, then it's the drive enclosure which is bad.
My bet is that the enclosure is bad, as I had two Que CDRW drive enclosures that went bad (that was a few years ago though).
