Hello :-)

My name is Carolyn and I'll try to help you.

First, I see that you are new to Mac so congrats! Let's see if we can get your iBookG3 operating more to your liking :-)

Now, first thing I want you to try is Disk Utility. Follow this path: Double click the
MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. (I'm hoping you can see which one that is). The icon looks like a hard drive. Now, if you can't get that open, click the Blue Finder icon in the the Dock which is at the bottom of your Desktop. The Blue Finder icon is at the very left side of the Dock. You can double click the Macintosh HD icon from there if need be. It's located in the Sidebar on the left side. Now, once you've opened the MacintoshHD, double click the Applications Folder, then click the Utilities folder. In your Utilities folder look for, "Disk Utility". Double click to launch it. When that window opens, select "MacintoshHD" in the panel on the left side. Then click the button below that says, "Repair Permissions". That takes about a minute to run. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility. You can do that by going to the Menu up top of your Desktop and clicking: Disk Utility>Quit. Now, reboot your iBook and see if your desktop icons are working. If not... I want you to locate a certain file. It looks like this: com.apple.finder.plist To locate this file double click the MacintoshHD like you did before then click Users (that would be your Home Folder which you have probably named), then click Library and then click Preferences. In that Preferences folder is the: com.apple.finder.plist file. Drag it to the Trash, and then empty the Trash. Reboot the iBook. See if your Desktop icons are in better shape.

Let me know how it goes...
Carolyn :-)
PS Thanks for choosing Macosx.com!
